If once in a while you crave a super-salty snack or feel so stressed that you turn to a food you’ve been avoiding, it’s okay. Just remember your original reasons for wanting to lower your sodium intake and to eat healthy. Remind yourself to take life one day at a time and not to be discouraged: it’s always better to do something that gets you closer to your goal than to do nothing at all.
Celebrate Your Successes
Since you began the process of changing your diet, what steps have worked for you? Did your follow-up tracker show a reduction in sodium? Did your blood pressure go down? Be sure to congratulate—and reward—yourself for each and every one of your successes! For every move you make toward lowering the sodium in your diet, give yourself something that makes you feel good. Decide in advance on a treat that will motivate you—perhaps a new book, a massage, or a gift card to your favorite store. Whatever reward you choose, find one that is both enjoyable and healthy. You might want to go to the movies, but you’ll need to stay away from the popcorn and other high-sodium concessions. Instead, why not consider renting a movie and treating yourself to Three-Way Popcorn at home.
Ultimately, the real reward for sticking to your commitment will be a longer, more vital life. Perhaps you’re a parent who wants to provide a healthy diet for your young children, or a busy executive who wants to stay in top form, or maybe you’re middle-aged and facing a diagnosis of high blood pressure or heart disease. No matter who you are or why you want to cut back on sodium, doing so will significantly increase your chances of avoiding a debilitating or deadly disease later in life. When you combine those better odds with the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, your choices will have a profoundly positive effect on your overall well-being.
