Chapter Twelve
Aunt Ted had a flair for nice things. In other words, she wasn't one of those sad sack men who dress like women who don't know what they are doing. She didn't wear over-sized flour sack dresses, with depressing fake pearl earrings and long boat-shaped shoes with big buckles and square flat heels. She kept a trim figure and wore bright, interesting colors. Her dresses were fitted to perfection and her shoes sleek high heels. She always had long red nails and a manicure. Though she was taller than most women, when strangers spotted her at a glance they would never have guessed she'd been born a man. It took people a few minutes to reach that conclusion. And that's because she worked hard at being a women, a real woman. Aunt Ted kept up with the latest styles in fashion, books, moviesâ¦and everything else. She read about the best interior designers, and could discuss the latest culinary trends. In fact, she loved pop culture before the concept of pop culture even existed.
So when she pulled up to the house one Friday afternoon in a brand new periwinkle blue Cadillac convertible, no one was as surprised as they should have been. We were more surprised to see that she had a man with her, a younger man who dressed as if he was going to one of those slick jazz nightclubs. He had shiny dark hair, and wore a light gray pinstripe suit with wide lapels and a wide tie. When he climbed out of the Cadillac and ran around to the driver's side to open the door for Aunt Ted, I noticed his shoes were brown and white wing tips. The only men I'd ever seen who dressed that way lived in Ashville.
As the young man reached for Aunt Ted's hand to help her climb out of the car, I sent Aunt Matilda a look and shook my head side to side. We knew Aunt Ted had taken the bus to Ashville to buy some kind of special fabric she needed for a wedding quilt the women were making for another girl on the mountain. She was supposed to spend a few nights in Ashville with an old family friendâ¦someone who was sympathetic to Aunt Ted's situationâ¦and return to Buddy's Mountain on the bus. We'd been waiting for her to call us from the bus stop in Rayville that afternoon so we could drive down and get her.
When all this happened, Clay was in the mercantile working that afternoon so he missed all this in person. He didn't see Aunt Ted smile and swoon at the young man as he helped her out of the car, and he didn't see the young man set his palm on the small of Aunt Ted's back and guide her toward the gate where I was waiting with Aunt Matilda.
As we both stood there gaping, Aunt Ted and the young man walked up to us and Aunt Ted said, "I'd like you both to meet someone.
