CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Laura turned off the engine and squinted up at the building they had parked out front of, making out two windows full of light on this side and what looked like one more around the other side. “Someone’s up,” she commented to Nate. It was two in the morning. Why would you be up if not because you’d just been out committing a crime?

“Are we just going straight in?” Nate asked.

“I think we’d better,” Laura replied. “There’s no time for being clever tonight. If we’re right, any second of delay could give him more of a chance to get rid of the evidence. We get in there, arrest him, and get him back to the precinct before he can finish cleaning up.”

Nate didn’t say anything, as he was reaching for his door and getting out of the car – a tacit agreement that getting on with it right away was the best policy. Laura followed him to the entrance of the building: it looked like a normal residential home, if a large one, but they both knew there was more to it than met the eye. This was a place where criminals leaving institutions or prisons came to stay, to help them acclimate to the real world again. The people who lived here did so temporarily, and each one of them had once been an offender.

Even if they were supposedly reformed, Laura wasn’t going to leave an inch of caution outside. They needed to be on their guard here. There was no way to know how the residents would react to waking up and finding a couple of FBI agents in their midst.

Nate knocked loudly; there was only a short pause before the door opened, which was unusual enough in itself. It was the middle of the night, after all.

But even more unexpected was the fact that the man opening the door was, judging by the quick web search Nate had conducted on the way over, exactly who they were looking for.

“Ronan Linwood?” Laura asked, almost too shocked to find her voice for a minute.

“Yes?” he said, looking between them. If he was alarmed to be visited at this time of the night by people who were obviously law enforcement, he didn’t say it.

“I’m Special Agent Frost, with Special Agent Lavoie,” Laura said. “We need to talk with you.”

“Okay,” he said, stepping aside, just like that. “Please, come in.”

Laura almost stumbled at how easy it was to get him to comply so far. Was this him trying to play the system, to see if he could trick them into leaving by appearing unworried? Most ex-cons, whether they had been to prison or to a mental health institution, were going to be wary around cops. It didn’t matter what kind of subterfuge he tried to pull. They were going to do a full and thorough investigation, no matter what. Being invited in meant that they could look around without a warrant, so that was the first step.
