Chapter 22

Gino tosses down a shot of whisky that’s been sitting unattended for a while. “I gotta go,” he says and gets up, staggering to the door as he dresses, and hurrying from the sound of the girls laughing. He barges through the people standing around drinking in the bar and bursts from the open doors to rush down the road to his cabin.

Gino makes it as far as the steps and climbs them, sitting on the veranda and lying back with his hands over his face. It must be nearly midnight. The world is spinning from the effect of all that alcohol. He tries to process the images filling his mind and the thought of Sofia still there in the dungeon room. He sits up, thinking of going to get her. He knows he should, but the world is spinning so badly, and he has to lie back down.

An hour passes with intermittent periods of sleep and replaying images of all these other men with his wife. Gino crawls toward the cabin door and gets up to stagger to the lounge. He collapses there and sinks into another period of nightmarish sleep.

When he eventually wakes properly and is able to sit up and focus his attention on his surroundings, it’s almost dawn. He staggers to the bedroom doorway to find the bed still made and no sign of his wife. He goes to the bathroom and leans over the toilet, relieving himself. Then he skulls a glass of water and walks back up to the main resort building.

The foyer is open but the bar and restaurant are shut down and deserted. Gino walks downstairs and along the corridor to the room the blond guy showed him a few nights ago. The door is unlocked. He pushes it open and finds the room empty, everything seemingly in place, exactly as it was when he visited before. He checks around, finding a small room in the back where there’s a sink containing the vibrating massager and the string of beads.

Gino wanders from the room and back up to the foyer. He walks through the empty bar areas and up to the corridor leading to the big open lounge area his boss had taken him to. It’s deserted, the television off, empty glasses still littering the place.

“Fuck,” Gino groans, gripping his head and looking out the huge windows at the lake and dawn horizon. He huffs a breath and collapses onto a lounge chair. “Oh shit!” he suddenly exclaims and pulls his phone from his pocket. He clicks it on. There’s a missed call and text from his wife.

Sofia: Hey Gino I’ll be back in the morning. I’m spending the night with Carlton. Hope that’s okay xx

Gino hits call. The phone doesn’t even ring before he’s directed to leave a message.

Gino: What the fuck Sofe!

Gino sits holding his phone, hoping for a reply but not really expecting one.

“Fucking bitch,” he growls to himself and strides back through the resort building and down the road to his cabin.
