Chapter 32
In the line of fire
âA weapon?â Don asked, taking his place behind his desk. Zer0 used silence to imply that he was correct. He saw in Donâs worried eyes that the effect was as he intended: sharp and direct.
There were two polished metal armchairs in Donâs private office, designed as efficiently as a pair of fighter jets and parked at precise angles to the sharp edge of his desk. There were no ornaments on the desk, only a shining black seashell anchored near the far corner of the gleaming surface. The desk itself was made of two interlocking triangles, one of transparent glass, the other of mirrored chrome. The room was optimised in every way. On opposite side walls, mirrors reflected each other into infinity. Above Donâs hard crystal seat, bolted to the ceiling, an exposed clock mechanism counted down the cycles.
âIt was described to me as a line, a solid straight line that can pierce any equation that we might form in its path,â explained Zer0.
âWhat about physical objects? Walls, machinery?â
âI donât have any more reliable information at this time, but I have a way of obtaining some,â offered Zer0.
âSpeak,â commanded Don.
âIt might be best if you were not fully informed of my activities. If you are able to deny all knowledge of my actions, I can consider using lessâ¦official methods with far higher chances of success.â
âYou still answer to me, Zer0, do not forget that.â
âAnd I will deliver what you need. I simply suggest that you look only at the results and not at the way in which I provide them.â
A moment passed between the two digits, a long stare in which Don carefully considered the consequences of Zer0âs proposal.
âThis is not a decision I can take alone,â Don said finally. âGather the Prime Constants immediately.â
Zer0 hesitated only slightly before nodding and crossing towards the door.
âAnd, Zer0?â
Zer0 paused at the door and turned around.
âI may need you at the Tourbillon. The Constants will need convincing.â
âVery well,â said Zer0. A private smile flashed across his face as he turned and left the room.
Standing at the edge of the Tourbillonâs giant dial floor, Zer0 was listening closely to the arguments that the four Constants were spitting back and forth. This was exactly why he felt a new world order was required. Too much talk, too much time wasted in pointless discussions just so everyone could agree on something that an inspired leader would already know. When power was shared, authority was always weakened and quick action was impossible. Now that he felt his moment was approaching, Zer0 was eager to take matters into his own hands, but he had not arrived this far without patience. With his passion under control, Zer0 stood calmly waiting for the right moment to speak up.
The delicate aspect was to introduce Toodles into the discussion. Zer0âs first trip to the Land of Letters, which Don had approved but not made public, was unofficial. The fact that Zer0 had lied about going was just as problematic.
