FIVE

I had no idea where I was being taken to but that was kind of the point. I’d been down this road many times before with those who’d pissed off Bobby Jay for some reason or another, only this time I was on the receiving end of his anger.

Some of those dragged off to far flung locations escaped with a hiding, others weren’t so lucky and were never seen or heard from again. I wasn’t directly involved with murder, but I wasn’t naïve enough to believe those that did cross Bobby Jay would be given a slap then sent on their way.

Blindfolded, I could see nothing, but played my part and lay on the cold hard floor of the truck, my ankles bound together, terrified of what was to come. Death, I welcomed, but I wouldn’t be so lucky. Bobby Jay would force me into submission, it was his way of teaching me a lesson. What he had planned for me afterward I could only guess at.

My thoughts jumped to Roxie. I couldn’t get the image of her wild eyes from my mind.

Would Bobby Jay honor his word and let her go or would I sell my soul for nothing?

“Where are we?” A sharp kick to my ribs sent pain coursing through me and robbed me of words.

“Shut the fuck up, maggot.” I recognized Donnie’s voice and made a promise to myself. I’d rip his guts out if I managed to escape.

“Leave the boy alone, Donnie, I want him in one piece.” Bobby Jay sat closer than I liked. “He’s going to enjoy our time together, ain’t ya pretty boy?”

I was still too winded to answer. Thinking of her eyes darting about continued to torture me.

“Are you really gonna let Roxie go?” Donnie asked.

“Are you questioning my honor?”

“No, Bobby Jay, never, but what if she squeals and sends the cops our way?”

“Even she wouldn’t be so dumb as to do that.”

“You seem sure of yourself.”

“You’re skatin’ on pretty thin ice now boy, watch yourself.”

“I meant no disrespect, Bobby Jay, but this affects us all, not just you.”

“Watch what you say, Donnie, or I might change my mind and give you a taste of what Dallas will get.”

I prayed they’d turn on one another and forget about me, but that was a pipe dream. Their bond was made with blood and when push came to shove, they stood by one another, something I’d failed to do.

The truck stopped with a sudden lurch, almost sending Bobby Jay and Donnie sprawling on top of me.

“Who taught you how to drive boy?”

“Sorry, Bobby Jay.”

I heard Donnie huffing as he climbed to his feet. “Garrett, you dick, I almost broke my fuckin’ neck.”

“Sorry, man,” he called from up front. Fisher wasn’t in the back with us. I suspected he was up front with Garrett.

I heard Bobby Jay’s sharp intake of breath. “Move your ass, Donnie, open these doors then get this piece of shit inside before anybody sees us.”

“You got it, boss.”

I was lifted up
