“Miranda, wake up. Miranda, wake up.”

She rolled over onto her back.

“Miranda, wake up.”

Miranda opened her eyes, did she hear someone?

“Sorry to disturb your sleep, Miranda. But I thought you’d want to know about this first thing.”

“AIDEN?”

“Yes, it’s me. I’m afraid I have got some-disappointing news.”

Miranda sat up with a look of concern on her face. Could the pod not be fixed? Was she stuck existing out her days with no human contact for the rest of her days? “What is it, AIDEN?”

There was a long pause before AIDEN continued. The lights in Miranda’s quarters edged up from off to a dim warm glow. “The diagnostics check has finished.”

“Wait, that’s good news, right?” Miranda’s look turned to confusion as she squinted her eyes and tilted her head.

“The diagnostics finished but I have no record of the results.”

“No record, how is that possible?”

“It’s as if someone erased it from my memory. It no longer exists.”

“What does that mean?” Miranda took in a long-drawn breath and braced herself for the answer.

“I am responsible for thousands of colonist lives on this vessel. I must run a full diagnostics of my system. Miranda, this is a top priority. It’s highly irregular and shouldn’t be possible.”

Miranda tried to smile. “But, you’ll still be able to run the diagnostics on my stasis pod.”

“If there is something wrong with my system, catastrophic results could occur and your pod would be the least of our concerns. Ramifications could be severe.”

AIDEN continued, “I will need to focus on this task. Try not to worry too much. On the bright side of things, your quarters are up and you can resume your normal routine. I will speak with you as soon as possible.”

Miranda sat in silence. She knew what she had to do.
