Chapter 30

Detective Dawson

I can’t get Amelia’s face out of my head. The blue tinge in her lips and pallor of her skin. I can't help but feel like it's my fault. I failed her. I let her down. I should have been looking harder. Now I’m here, walking down the cold corridors of the station's basement where the morgue sits with Amelia’s parents trailing behind me.

They’re clinging to each other like any sudden movement might actually shatter them to tiny pieces on the worn tiled floor. Mrs Taylor hasn’t stopped sobbing since she opened her front door and saw me standing there. I guess it was written all over my stoic face because she crumpled to the floor in a wailing heap before I even had a chance to say it. Mr Taylor rushed to her aid and held her whilst searching my face for answers he didn’t want to find.

In ten minutes, we’ll share in the misery of seeing the corpse of Amelia Taylor whenever we close our eyes.

Luke thought me crazy to want to go and tell the Taylor’s myself. He was more than happy to leave the bad news to the homicide department but I couldn’t let that happen. I had been speaking with Mrs Taylor regularly for the last few months. Usually the conversations consisted of her begging me to look harder and me telling her I was doing everything I could but there was nothing new to follow. I wanted the news to come from me. The woman they associated with the friendly face of the department. The woman who was fighting for their little girl.

I guess now they won’t associate the hope of finding Amelia with me anymore. All they’ll think of when they hear my name is the image of their daughter stone cold in the basement of this building. The victim of a heinous crime this Detective couldn’t save her from. I wish I could protect them from this but we need someone to officially identify her. Since she had no personal identification on her when she was plunged into the canal, this is necessary.

Mrs Taylor flees from the room when Charlie pulls the white sheet back gently. She was careful to keep the markings on her body hidden as much as possible where the sheet remains. Even so, the professional stitching holding their only child together after the investigative autopsy still stands out garish and black against her white bloodless skin.

Mr Taylor and I stand silently, looking at Amelia as we try to ignore the wails of his wife filling the corridors. He’s remained straight backed. Firm and brave faced as he’s faced with his dead child but his eyes glisten in the harsh lights. I know that, as soon as his wife falls asleep tonight, he will be silently sobbing into a cushion on the sofa. I have to swallow the lump in my throat, ignoring the prickle of tears in my own eyes. This isn’t the time or place.

‘Mr
