ATLANTA, GEORGIA

“DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!”

(MYTHBUSTERS)

June’s arrival brought with it a sense of new opportunities. As impossible as it had felt when Liv had walked through the wide doors of the University of Colorado months earlier, she had survived her freshman year. Now the preparations for the trip to Atlanta, Georgia, where Dragon Con was being held, became her highest priority.

“I need a job,” she told Xander. “A good one.”

“One job won’t cut it,” he scoffed. “If you want spending money, you should have been saving all year.”

“Well, unless you’ve invented a time machine,” Liv said, swatting his arm, “that really doesn’t help me now, does it?”

“Don’t yell at me.” Xander laughed. “I’m just stating a fact. Dragon Con is fun, but the fun costs a hell of a lot of money, dearest.”

Liv scowled. “What’s my second option?”

“Get two jobs and hope to hell you have enough.”

They blanketed the city with Liv’s résumé, calling back to check on progress, and in a week, Liv was working full time as a graphic designer at a downtown photography studio (Gary’s competition). During the day, she removed blemishes from people’s photographs and created cheesy calendars for Boulder’s elderly community. She spent her evenings alongside Xander at Cup O’ Joe as a part-time waitress to replace the often-absent Marcy. Liv’s meager free time was spent replying to the avalanche of posts for #SpartanSurvived. Though she had a limited amount of time to vid, she was happy to discover Spartan’s revival had taken on a life of its own.

Liv scanned the Dragon Con panel list daily. Most of the Starveil cast was slated to attend. Mike R. Miles told the press on several occasions that there would be a “big announcement” at the Starveil panel, and the Spartan fan forums were burning with speculation as to what that meant. Interest in Starveil reached a fever pitch. Liv just wished her father—who’d been a fan every bit as passionate as Liv was—had lived to see the series’ resurgence.

Working twelve hours a day, Liv hardly had time to herself. Her occasional afternoons off were spent helping Xander finish his cosplay ensemble. She sewed braid onto the shoulders with meticulous stitches, adding painstaking embroidered details to the finished garment.

“Why did we sew the smoking jacket if you wanted to bring the military coat?” Liv complained, rubbing her pinpricked hands.

Xander preened in front of the mirror. “I wanted both,” he said simply.

“Then why the rush? We could have finished this after we got back.”

He twirled around. “You don’t just bring one costume to Dragon Con.” He laughed. “You bring a costume for every day!” He did up the row of mother-of-pearl buttons while Liv tidied the pieces of cloth from the floor. “What are you bringing to wear?”

“Clothes,” Liv said, stretching her back.

He came up behind her, resting his hands on her shoulders. “Besides your regular clothes, dearest.”

Liv shook her head. “Nothing.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to?” Xander’s hands slid down her arms, and Liv shivered at his touch.
