Chapter 18
On Sunday morning the house phone woke her. Edy tried to untangle herself from the covers as she rolled over to answer it. “Hello.”
“Please don’t hang up. I’m not asking for another chance, I blew it this time. I know that. I’d like to meet with you and discuss whether you’ve given any thought to adopting the baby.”
“We have nothing to discuss, Cedric. The child’s yours, not mine. You’ve got to think me a fool if you imagined I’d take that slut’s child, or yours. Don’t call again.”
“After twenty years of marriage, that’s it? We need to discuss what you’re going to give me to get rid of me.”
“Exactly what you’ve given me—nothing,” she said in a controlled tone, the lieutenant’s warning holding her back from engaging him more.
“I’m going to drag this divorce out for years, Edy, if you think I’m walking away empty-handed. And when I’m done, you’ll never be able to show your face anywhere. I’ll get what’s mine.”
“You signed the prenup. And you’re the one who couldn’t keep it in his pants.” For too many years I’ve allowed my love for him to cloud my judgment. Well, not anymore.
“You’ll regret this.”
Edy jerked the phone from her ear as he slammed his phone down. She checked the time. A little after eight on a Sunday morning was a little too early to call her dad. She’d wait until nine to call him to give him an update. Together they’d make Cedric’s life a living hell.
She climbed out of bed, tugged her robe off the bedpost, and went downstairs for coffee. The purpose of Cedric’s call baffled her.
“Good morning, Benita.”
“Morning, ma’am. I’ll pour.” Benita pushed up from the kitchen chair, closing the newspaper.
“No, I’m good. Make sure all the doors are locked at all times, okay?”
“Yes. What would you like for breakfast?”
“Nothing. I’m going to go up and shower first. Are you going out today?”
“Yes, my sister and I are going shopping,” Benita said.
“Well, enjoy yourself.”
Halfway up the stairs, she realized Cedric had to have figured out that she had disabled the cameras yesterday. Had he been waiting for her to explode or mention the blackmail letter? Lord, I should’ve worked in a vague reference to see how he’d react. Isn’t it brilliant of me to think of it after the fact?
She wondered what Cedric, a vindictive man, had cooked up for her. She’d have to wait and see. The sneaky little weasel didn’t worry her. I hold all the cards, she thought, with a savage vengeance eating away at her heart. Then she paused. Except for the photos.

Jake woke refreshed, stretched, then inched his hand to the other side of the bed, only to find it empty, the space cold. Mia up before me? Jake rolled toward the clock, stunned at the time. He got up and went down the hallway to the kitchen.
“Half the day is gone. Why didn’t you wake me?”
“You needed the rest. What do you want to eat?” Mia asked.
