CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Jade's heartbeat kept tempo with the thumping bass as she and Connor pushed through the throngs of bodies gyrating to an electric rhythm. Club Inferno lived up to its name—a maelstrom of chaos and ecstasy, where sweat-soaked skin shimmered under strobe lights like a sea of human fervor. Jade's gaze, ever vigilant, swept over the crowd in search of their quarry.

"Over there," shouted Connor, pointing towards the gleam of gaudy jewelry and the unmistakable puff of furs at the bar.

Markus Dawn was hard to miss, even in this sensory overload. The club owner stood out like a peacock among pigeons, his attire screaming for attention. With each step closer, Jade’s senses heightened—the air grew thick with anticipation; the noise of the club became a distant echo.

"Mr. Dawn!" Connor had to raise his voice to cut through the din. His badge flashed briefly as he leaned in. "FBI. We need to talk."

Markus turned, his eyes locking onto Jade's with a glint of recognition that sent a chill down her spine. He sized them up, lips curving into a smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes, which remained cold and calculating. Still, he nodded, a beckoning gesture leading them away from the bar's scrutiny.

"Follow me," he said, his voice a strange counterpoint to the pounding music, smooth yet somehow unsettling.

They trailed behind Markus, his fur coat leaving a wake through the crowd. At every turn, his presence elicited subtle reactions—nervous glances, hushed whispers, and the occasional obsequious bow. The power he wielded within these walls was palpable, and Jade could feel the weight of it pressing against her, trying to unnerve her. But she wouldn't let it. She couldn't afford to.

Jade’s pulse hammered in sync with the bass beats that vibrated through the club's floors as Markus Dawn led them away from the chaos of the main room. The winding staircase creaked underfoot, a discordant harmony. They emerged into a quieter space, a lounge area designed for more intimate gatherings. Plush couches lined the walls, the dim lighting offering a stark contrast to the strobe-lit dance floor they'd left behind. Markus’s demeanor shifted as soon as they were secluded, the eccentric charm giving way to something more disconcerting. He perched on an extravagant throne-like chair, a king holding court.

Jade observed him closely, noting the minute twitch in his jaw, the way his gaze darted between her and Connor. It was like watching a predator deciding whether they were prey or a threat. She remembered Alicia’s suggestion about joining the FBI full-time, wondered if this was the kind of life she wanted, always hunting, always on edge. For now, though, she focused on the task at hand.

"Much better, don't you think?" Markus said, his voice oddly hushed in the newfound calm. He swept an arm toward the seating, inviting them to sit. As they settled onto the overstuffed cushions, Jade felt the scrutiny behind Markus’s gaze. "I recognize you," he remarked, pointing a finger at her with a theatrical flair. "You've played the guardian angel for some of my more.
