Later that day, after I took Amelie home, I went to the stable to make sure Noir was ready for the show.

My brother, Alex, and his father were there too. It was still weird not to call him ‘Dad’, but in those rare moments when we did meet accidentally, I preferred to call him by his first name. He didn’t seem to mind.

“You need to focus on the game!” Nicholas barked at Alex.

I stopped walking and listened to their conversation from behind a half-open door.

“I’m not as good as Kade is and you know it,” my brother said in response.

“Forget about Kade! It’s just you and me now, and I want you to show what you’re capable of!”

They were talking about the next polo game. It was going be to be their first game together because Alex got sick right before the first match of the season and Nicholas had to ask someone else to replace him. Needless to say, he would never ask me to join the team again. Which is why the upcoming game was so important for him. He couldn’t let Alex screw it up, and neither could he turn him into a good player. Because let’s face it, my brother sucked at polo and there was no way in hell to change that. The good news was he knew how to ride a horse at all.

“Why don’t you ask Khloe to play with you?” Alex asked.

“She’s a girl, you idiot! I need my son by my side. Period!”

“It has always been Kade you wanted by your side.” I could hear accusation in Alex’s voice. “You never saw me as his equal.”

“Now, everything’s different. You’re my only son and you have to be worthy of your name.”

“What about Kade? Don’t you care about him at all?”

I held my breath, waiting for Nicholas’s response. I guess a small part of me still wanted him to love me, to care about me.

But the ugly truth was that hope springs eternal.

“I don’t care if he dies or vanishes into thin air. He means nothing to me anymore.”

And just like that, the boy inside me who always worshipped every single word his father said to him, died the very moment the terrible confession sliced through the air like a sharp knife.

I don’t care if he dies . . .

And I don’t care if you burn in hell!
