FOR THE FIRST time in far too long, I actually felt as though I deserved the designation of pack leader. The upcoming discussion with Spencer and Hamid was going to require sensitive handling, and while he wouldn’t admit it, Angel had clearly been terrified of telling them about his decision.

He was terrified of the whole thing—the conversation, the prospect of mating, the fact that he was almost ready to face his demons head-on. And in his fear, he’d come to me.

Yes, it was true he should have spoken to Juni first. He’d realized that almost immediately. Fortunately, Juniper Maslow didn’t have a vindictive bone in her body, so it was no surprise that she’d forgiven him the instant she understood how hard this decision had been for him.

I’d already been the beneficiary of Juni’s forgiving nature. Another omega might have resented me for basically shunning her because she resembled a dead woman too closely, while still giving off wildly mixed signals the whole time. Instead, she’d empathized with me... even expressed regret and sympathy for my long-ago loss.

It was safe to say that none of us would be where we were if Juni hadn’t stumbled into our lives.

“Would you like me to speak with the others first?” I’d asked Angel, once we’d all agreed on a timeline for the mating and a set of relationship boundaries.

Hope had flared in Angel’s pale blue eyes, but then it faded, replaced by resignation. “No, I should do it. I’m the one throwing the cat amongst the pigeons.”

But if he and I were going to change the way our relationship worked, this was the time to do it. Feeling a confidence that had been lacking for far too long, I’d taken his chin in my hand and gently tilted his face up to mine.

“Angel. Stop. You are an omega, and I am your alpha. It’s my job—it’s my honor—to protect you in all things, no matter how large or how small. I’ll talk to my packmates, and once I’ve explained the situation and heard any objections they may care to offer, you and Juni will join us so you can speak with them as well.”

That spark of hope returned, but Angel immediately tried to play his reaction off as a joke. “You’re just trying to keep them from yelling at me, because you’re afraid I’ll melt down if they do.”

“There won’t be any yelling,” I’d replied with complete assurance.

“Growling, then?” Angel asked, still trying to make it into banter.

I allowed him to lighten the mood, since that was what he needed. “Yes, there will probably be some growling involved. No need for you to bear witness, though.”

Juni’s eyes had been suspiciously bright with emotion, but she’d jumped on the change in tone. “Oh, I don’t know. Under the right circumstances, a bit of alpha growling can be pretty hot.”

“I’m confident you only need ask, and you’ll get all the sexy growling you could ever want,” I’d told her, letting a hint of an alpha rumble come through in my voice.
