There were girls in the stalls talking. As I entered the toilets, they hushed up. I washed my face, entered a stall, then heard them leaving, speaking in low murmurs in a language I didn’t recognise. Eassusian? Fae? They left, and the toilets were quiet.

When I came out of the stall, one of them was waiting for me.

She had dark purple velvety hair, swept back, and three hoops of plaits sprang from the back of her head like Olympic rings. The shade of her hair matched her eyes: while Saffron’s eyes were a light purple, like lilacs, this girls’ eyes were the shade of a violet. I recognised her. She’d been amongst the group of Eassusians last night.

“Lori Fields. Part mage, part Eassusian.” Her voice echoed in the emptiness of the toilets.

I waited for her to add ‘unregistered’, but as she refrained, I said as I washed my hands, “And you are?”

“Arameen Miamar. We heard the fae princess talking to you last night.”

I sighed inwardly, noticing she didn’t have an Eassusian accent and spoke perfect English.

“The way she was screeching it would have been hard to avoid,” I replied. She gave a wry smile. “Did Saffron speak to you… about being allies?” I flicked my gaze to her.

“She did. She mentioned a light-reaper attacked you and that, despite knowing nothing of magic, you survived. Both of which we were aware.”

She faced me and put a finger marked with circular symbols to her lips, then blew. The faintest twist of colours wrapped around us before clearing.

“I’ve placed protection barriers around us; you never know who might be listening.” She glanced at the main toilet door.

“Do you believe I’m a spy, like Priscilla mentioned?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest.

“We haven’t decided. If you are an assassin, then know we’ll be ready for you.” She looked at me levelly as I tried not to flinch at her frankness. “If not, you should know – the mages hold sway here. As an unregistered Eassusian, it is they you should be worried about… and I’d look out for Priscilla – the screeching fae with the disproportionately large rear,” she added, and released a low, rumbling laugh.

I returned a tentative half-grin.

She pointed to a loose hair on my clothes, picked it off my shoulder, but didn’t drop it, as I expected. Instead, she twirled it round a finger.

Weird, creepy, and why? I wanted to ask for it back, but I didn’t want to get off on the wrong foot. I thought of protesting my innocence regarding being a spy, but if I were in her shoes, I wouldn’t trust me either.

“My main advice to you is to trust no one,” she said, her eyes large and round.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

She dropped my hair, squared up to me, and held her arm outstretched in front of her. I went to shake her hand, but she gave me a wan smile and withdrew from it. I frowned in confusion.

“If you are simply unregistered, in time you’ll learn our ways.
