- Aker'on -

Jonah stopped the car after driving for a considerable time. Aker'on assumed that he was familiar with the area and the terrain. There had been many small dirt roads leading off the one they were on, and they had taken such a confusing route that Aker'on was no longer quite sure in which direction the town lay. But they were far inside the woods, he could see that much.

It had been interesting for him to learn about the way this society was structured. Electing a president who had nowhere near the power that Aker'on had on his own planet boggled his mind for real. He had never heard of such an insane scheme. Surely the only people elected would be the ones promising the people the sweetest foods, the most beautiful women and the most glorious parades? The chaos that would result!

On the other hand, this society seemed capable of producing warriors like Jonah, so it couldn't be rotten to the core. But they also should not expect much help from that side. It would be important to avoid capture by the Earthlings. The Gree hunt could not be far away now.

They exited the truck. They were in a clearing with tall trees and underbrush all around. It appeared to have been a quarry, because there was a wall of sand and tiny rocks off to one side.

"Okay," Jonah said. "We have to plan this. Teron. Akron is not a Ranger. He's an alien from another planet."

"I know that," the boy said evenly. "Those eyes and the invisibility kind of give it away. And I saw him by the crashed spaceship."

The boy looked at them with large, dark, innocent eyes. The two men were stunned into silence for two heartbeats. Then Aker'on gave a hoot of laughter and slapped the boy's back. "Now here is a scout I'd like to have among my Royal Guards! Such powers of observation! Such ability to keep a secret! Oh, I have just the platoon for you."

Jonah frowned. "You saw him when you found that pod?"

"Yeah! He was the first thing I saw, too, before I spotted the pod. I thought he was a friend of yours who was helping you with the exercise. But I didn't want to spoil it for the other New Rangers."

Jonah gave a short, delighted laugh, and Aker'on enjoyed both the sight and sound of it. Such a serious man, his Davan.

"You saw him there and didn't say a word about it to anyone? You're something else, Teron. You'll make a sensational Ranger."

The boy beamed with pride again, and Aker'on reflected that this was a child who had not heard enough good things about himself in his short life. "We'll see, my Davan. Your Rangers or my Royal Guards. One of them will have a new recruit not so long from now."

Jonah glanced at him. "You'll have to fight me for him. Okay, so the reason we're here is that I want to check something. Aker'on, you've got your camouflage suit on.
