SEVENTEEN

FAITH

Somehow we get Audun onto Chani’s back. Chani twists his long body around and snakes part of it around Audun’s middle. With me heaving and pushing and arranging his limbs, we sort of flop him on his belly. He grunts as we do it and I wince. I hope he’s not in too much pain. The bleeding has slowed, but it’s still bad. I have no idea how much blood he can afford to lose, but every drop makes me more anxious.

“Just hang on, okay?” I whisper as I climb on behind him, tucking my thighs around his body and clinging tight with my arms. Either he hears me or some underlying instinct kicks in. When Chani takes off, Audun’s tail curls around Chani and Chani assures me that the suckers on his tail, hands, and feet will help him cling on.

I’m about ready to hurl by the time Chani descends toward the crash site. My belly is all coiled with tension and worry and my muscles are sore from clinging to Chani and Audun. When we set down, I slide off onto trembling limbs. Chani lies on his belly and I drag Audun to the ground. He slumps, propped up against Chani’s side, and it quickly becomes obvious this is going to be a problem. I pull at his arm, but I can’t even lift him, let alone move him.

How the heck am I supposed to get this six-foot something alien into Pia’s ship to heal him?

Call him like you called me, Chani says into my mind.

Huh? “But I didn’t call you. How could I? And how can I call Audun? It’s not like I can speak to his mind.”

Chani twists his large head around to look at me with those sea-deep eyes. If you can speak to me, then you can speak to his mind, Faith.

I drop Audun’s arm and stumble back, landing on my butt. “What?”

You are his fated one.

“N-no. I can’t be.” I’m shaking my head, already knowing what Chani will say. I can see the belief written in his canine features and soulful look.

You must be. No other could talk to me through the mind bond.

I’m floored. Literally and figuratively! But there’s really no time to sit stupidly in the dirt and argue with Chani about why I could never be Audun’s fated one. Not if I want to save him. If calling him with my mind is what will help me do it, I’ll try. I’ll try anything.

I crouch in front of him, clear my throat, and brush my hands over my knees. Just exactly how does one call someone with their mind anyway?

Send him a vision of what you want him to see. Let him feel your emotions like I felt you calling me for help. I was sleeping when you called me. But your need woke me. It will wake him too.

The bugs, the gray alien! I was so scared I must have reached out to Chani without knowing it.

Closing my eyes, I try to channel some of what I’m feeling into a message to Audun.
