Nadia had no appetite.

Well, that wasn’t strictly true. She still felt hungry, she just had no desire to rise and make her way over to the feeding trough. The idea of rising and shoving past the other women for a handful of watery gruel was simply less appealing than the chance to continue sitting, growling stomach or no.

Besides, sitting alone like this gave her the chance to grieve.

With her eyes closed, it was only the sound of approaching footsteps that told her she wasn’t alone. Gritting her teeth, Nadia forced herself to open her eyes.

Dr. Card stood before her, hands cupped into a small bowl. He knelt carefully on one knee, wearing a brave, false smile.

“Hey there, Nadia,” he murmured, stretching his hands toward her. “I brought you something to eat.”

She shook her head, casting her gaze aside. From the corner of her eye, she could see the worry and disappointment on his face. He continued to keep his hands outstretched for several seconds, obviously hoping she’d change her mind. Eventually, when she did not, he glanced back toward the trough and drank the gruel himself. The meals had been delivered less and less frequently over the last few days.

“You doing okay?” he whispered, moving to sit beside her.

She glared at him. Not with her usual anger—grief seemed to have suppressed that peculiar side-effect. Instead, the look had a similar, albeit obvious significance.

Wiping his sticky hands on his filthy jacket, Card reached out and gently took her hand in his.

“You know he’s out there,” he said, softly. “Your… son is fine.”

“I didn’t even get to see him,” Nadia whispered, voice cracking. Her throat was so dry that even those words hurt. “I didn’t hold him.”

“You were lucky to survive,” Card reminded her.

“I know.”

“Are you sure you don’t want some food? I’ll get more….”

“I’m fine.”

Card sighed, interlocking his fingers with hers and squeezing tenderly.

“Nadia, you need to eat something.”

She shook her head again.

“No. It’s better if—”

An explosion tore through the main door, knocking them to the ground and peppering them with bits of gravel. Even after Nadia picked herself up—Card had flung himself across her—it took her several seconds to make sense of what her senses were telling her.

The air was full of dust and smoke. And, far brighter than the dim blue walls, beams of light pierced through the fog, weaving this way and that.

Then, though distantly, she heard it: gunfire.

“Got something here!”

Nadia stared in utter shock as a man—a man, not a Coleos!—walked toward her. The man wore a set of ichor-stained BDUs and held his rifle at the ready. His tactical flashlight blinded her momentarily and she instinctively raised an arm to shield herself. Then the light dropped.

After a few seconds of blinking away spots, Nadia managed to see his face. It was a young man, no older than eighteen, with innocence in his eyes that she’d not seen in years.

“Uh, Sarge?” the lad called over his shoulder. “You’ll want to see this!”

Another figure approached, drawing Nadia’s gaze.
