Thirteen

It was Alice’s discharge day from the psychiatric unit and she couldn’t wait for her parents to come get her. It had been a grueling couple of weeks and Alice wouldn’t wish this experience on her enemy. She said goodbye to her only friend at the facility—Chelsie, before heading out to meet her parents in the driveway.

Alice put up a relaxed demeanor in front of her parents now, no longer bawling at the things she’d found out about her father and dead sister. She guessed there would be another way at getting revenge for her sister besides being the raging yelling girl who everyone thought had lost her mind.

During the silent ride home, Alice thought about Hal and wondered what he’d been up to since she had been away. Maybe he’d consulted with the spirit of her dead sister without her and found out more family secrets or perhaps, he had simply moved on and found another girl. Both instances were quite troubling to Alice who had gotten nothing more than a text message from Hal after days of love bombing him with Chelsie’s phone.

“Are you alright, honey?” Alice’s mom asked from the passenger seat, glancing behind with a beaming smile at her daughter.

Knowing she had to put up the perfect act to avoid getting sent back to the godforsaken psych ward, Alice copied her mother’s beaming smile. “Yes, Mom, I’m fine.” She nodded affirmatively and her father smiled at her through the rear view mirror.

The family soon arrived home a few minutes later and as soon as Alice stepped out on the lawn, she realized just how much she’d missed home as a wave of nostalgia enveloped her.

“You’re not coming in yet?” Alice’s mom asked from the front door as Alice remained rooted to a spot, glancing at the building like it was her first time seeing it.

“In a minute!” Alice vocally retorted as her mom and dad disappeared into the house. Taking a deep breath, Alice began casually walking around the house. She was almost to the backyard when she heard a faint male grunt followed by a clanking of stone against glass panes. Carefully sticking her head around into the backyard, Alice’s heart skipped multiple beats as she came face to face with Hal. He was flagrantly tossing stones up at her window and had even succeeded in leaving a visible dent that might eventually shatter if he kept up his tossing.

“Hal?” Alice called out, almost in disbelief as she feared the meds might still be doing a number on her with the hallucinations.

Glancing over in shock at the familiar voice that had just called out his name, Hal let out a muffled gasp once he set eyes on a red faced Alice, standing a few meters away from him with tears welling up in her pretty eyes.

“Oh my goodness, Alice. It’s really you!” Hal charged forward in a flash before he then wrapped his arms around her in a tight bear hug.

Alice was torn between pushing Hal off or just staying put.
