CHAPTER 53
BREE DIDNâT SAY much on the ride home after weâd taken Jannie to the sheriffâs office, where sheâd provided blood and urine for analysis. I asked for and received samples from the same specimens, a precaution.
When we got home and went inside, I put the samples in a brown bag in the fridge. Jannie started telling Nana Mama about everything that had happened. Ali lay on the couch, watching another episode of Uncharted with Jim Shockey.
âWhere is he now?â I asked. Shockey had traded his cowboy hat for a bandanna and was wading in murky water in a jungle.
âLike, the Congo?â
âThat Jim Shockey gets around,â I said. âBree come in?â
âIâm out here,â she called from the porch.
I went out, found her sitting in a rocker, looking out through the screen. She wasnât happy.
âWe okay?â I asked.
âNot really,â she said quietly.
âWhy?â
âDid you have to say that to Bell and Davis? That you were declaring war on them?â
âI was speaking from the heart.â
âI get that, Alex. But now youâre more of a target than you were before.â
âGood,â I said. âWe draw them out, and we shut them down.â
She looked up angrily. âWhy do you always put yourself in harmâs way?â
My chin retreated. âBree, you of all people should know that itâs part ofââ
âThe job?â she asked. âI donât think so. I donât put myself in harmâs way intentionally, and you do all the time. Did you ever stop for a second and think that itâs a pretty goddamn selfish habit?â
âSelfish?â I said, bewildered.
âYes, selfish,â Bree said. âYou have a family that needs you. You have a wife that needs you. And yet, at the drop of a hat, youâre ready to risk our happiness and well-being.â
I was speechless for several moments. Iâd never heard Bree talk like this before. My late wife and Aliâs mother, yes. But Bree, no.
I hung my head and said, âWhat should I have done?â
âDefuse the situation,â she said. âMake them think youâre no threat until youâve got damning evidence against them. But itâs too late, you escalated the threat, Alex, andââ
âBree,â I said, holding up my hands. âI get it, and Iâm sorry. In my own defense, because Jannie was being used, I got a little hot under the collar. It wonât happen again.â
âThatâs good to hear,â she said, getting up from the rocker and going inside. âBut you remain a target.â
I stood there a moment feeling a weight that hadnât been there ten minutes before. She was right. Iâd pushed when I should have been smarter and laid off.
In the kitchen, Jannie was finishing up a dinner of country-style ribs with Nana Mama.
My grandmother studied me, said, âYou in hot water?â
âTrying to get out,â I said, heaping rice on my plate and then helping myself to the ribs, which were falling off the bone and smelled incredible.
âThank you, Nana,â Jannie said, clearing her plate. âThat was great.â
âEasy recipe,â she said, waving off the compliment. âOrange juice and barbecue sauce. Then slow cook them at two fifty for four hours.
