Chapter Six

M onday, three days before Valentine’s Day, we pulled up in the Timmons’s driveway at seven not knowing what to expect. Aggie hesitated at the front door. She turned, “Do I ring or use my key?”

“I always ring, you do what makes you feel comfortable.” Aggie’s father answered the door after three rings. He hugged Aggie, then turned to me, cocked his head, and smiled.

“Hello Mr. Timmons,” I extended my arm, and we shook hands.

“Come in ladies, mom’s finishing the table, do y’all want a drink? Wine, something stronger?”

“I’ll have a wine spritzer daddy. Carly?”

“No, nothing for me thank you.”

Aggie’s mother stood in the doorway and shooed us into the dining room. “Sit, I’ve made all your favorites Aggie.” Aggie threw me a sideways glance with a roll of her eyes.

My comfort zone was zero. What the hell is going on? They passed dishes of food around the table. Aggie flipped, “Okay, what’s all this about?” Setting the dish in her hands on the table, she sighed. “What’s happening? What’s this about?”

Aggie’s mother swallowed a mouthful of food. “Aggie, can we please eat, then we’ll talk.”

We finished eating in silence. It felt like we sat at that table for hours. After dinner Anne-Marie Timmons announced, “Aggie, your father and I are divorcing. He’s keeping the house and staying in Houston to run the agency. I’m leaving and moving to Biloxi.”

I glanced over at Aggie. She didn’t say a word. She just moved her head up and down, not making eye contact with anyone at the table. I breathed in a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Aggie are you okay?”

“No, no, I’m not okay.” She glanced back and forth between her parents. “What the fuck? What’s going on with you two?”

“Don’t you dare talk like that A—”

“Anne-Marie, stop it.” He glanced over at Aggie. “Aggie, your mother, and I talked about this for a long time. It’s between us and only us. We wanted you to know. It seemed like the right time to tell you. You’re settled with Carly and we see no reason to carry this charade on any longer. Your mother bought a house in Biloxi when we went back for the holidays. It’s that simple.”

Aggie pushed her chair out from the table, stood and shook her head. “Let’s go Carly, I can’t deal with this right now.”

I slid my chair out, rose, and sighed. “Mr. and Mrs. Timmons, she’ll be okay.”

I followed Aggie out of the house. We got in the car. She didn’t say a word all the way back to the condo. Once inside, she unleashed. She threw her purse on the sofa and paced while mumbling. “It’s her fault. She’s always been a bitch. She’s probably screwing someone in Biloxi. I hate her. I—”

I sat on the sofa watching her until enough was enough.

“Aggie, since you hate her so much, chill. You’re free, she’s leaving, moving to another state. You’ll never see her again unless you want to see her. Chill—”

She stopped, turned from the window, and stared at me.
