âTristan couldnât have murdered Colin at 7 p.m. or earlier because Colin was playing video games at Ericâs weed dealerâs house until eight,â Roxie said unceremoniously when her sister picked up the phone. She had her cell pressed to her ear and tried to keep her voice low as she navigated through the end-of-day chaos in the school hallways.
It had taken a while to get the story out of Eric. He hadnât gone to the police because his dad had been threatening to send him to military school if he got caught smoking weed again. But the guilt of withholding information that might have helped with the investigation had been eating at him, so once the floodgates opened, heâd given her everything he knew.
Skylar was quiet for a long moment before she said, âDoes he have proof?â
Roxie had anticipated the question, which was why she had convinced Eric to show her the text messages between him and the dealer, time-stamped August 23 at 4:38 p.m. âComing over with Colin. That work? And the responseâSure Iâm home.
She explained this to Skylar then added, âThe dealer is some guy namedââ
âCaleb,â Skylar finished for her.
Roxie frowned. âHow did you know?â
âBecause Colin had the same weed dealer. But I didnât know thatâs what he was for a long time. Colin told me he went over to his house so frequently because he was his math tutor. I lost it when I found out. Mostly, I was upset that he lied to me. But also because he got fired from his summer job at Hermann Construction after he failed a drug test.â
âOh,â Roxie said, suddenly uncomfortable.
There was a long silence before Skylar muttered, âGoddamn it, Colin.â
Roxie bit her lip. âSounds like you guys had been arguing more than usual.â
Another pause. âMaybe we were. Whatâs your point?â
âListen. I know youâre certain Colin wouldnât have written you that breakup noteââ
âNot just he wouldnât have,â Skylar interrupted her, a hard edge to her voice. âCouldnât have. Only Tristan had access to the stationery it was written on, remember? And he didnât even receive it until after Colin died. But even if that werenât the caseâColin and I talked about a lot of other things you didnât know about. Like getting married. He brought it up constantly. He told me he wanted us to have a big family. At least four kids. Two dogs. He wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. And he would have, if it hadnât been cut short.â
She hung up the phone without another word.
Roxie sighed deeply, looking up at the ceiling. Then she shoved her phone in her backpack and stepped out into the parking lot. And that was when she spotted Tristan.
He was leaning over the open hood of her tour bus, the sleeves of his flannel pushed up over his elbows, dark curls hanging in his eyes. When he saw her walking over, he pushed the hood firmly closed and gave her a smile. âHey, stranger,â he said. âWhere
