Sitting at the sunroom, bright and early—the sun not even up yet—I sobered as I remembered how I first started in music. I’d heard songs on the radio when my dad drove me to school. I’d sing along with the rising and falling crescendo, matching those on the airwaves.

I was seven the first time he took me to a local concert. I stood in line, and waited with other excited kids for an autograph. I was able to get one after two hours’ wait. Dad said we had to go home. He had to work the next day, and it was almost midnight.

Mom had it framed, and placed it in my room. It was the first thing I saw when I woke up and the last thing I’d see before lights out. The seed of music grew inside me with every view.

I sighed. Those were the good days.

Leaving my notepad and pen on the lounge chair, I walked to the sunlight slicing through the distance, too faint yet.

When I turned sixteen, I had my first formal audition. My brother, Matt, twenty-one then, was my greatest supporter. He believed in me. He told me that I could do it. That I had a good voice but so did the others at the audition. It wasn’t easy and I was scared. But I gave it my all. I was chosen as a backup singer for a fundraising event performance then.

It wasn’t big, but it was a starting point. My parents grew concerned. They wanted me to focus on school. The problem was, music was more important to me. I went to classes, did my homework, and graduated, then moved on to college.

But every waking hour when I wasn’t in school, I spent practicing, listening to the famous artists’ albums, and honing my voice. I sowed countless hours and I spared nothing. Be it in the shower, watching TV, riding the school bus, or sometimes walking home from school. And the nickname, Wit, began. I’d answer questions in song. They thought I was being smart. Little did they know that I was simply maximizing my practice time.

Midway through college, I impressed a talent scout, and he signed me on to a two-year contract. I performed at small events first. Then larger ones.

I sang lively songs, carried people along. I especially loved hearing their voices fly along with mine.

After graduation from Fine Arts, I went full time into music. Granted, I wasn’t in the big wigs, but I held my own.

My audiences weren’t huge, but they were sizeable. When my contract came up for renewal, the executives said the label was doing poorly.

They needed to reinvent the artists and the music. Most artists left seeking greener pastures. I figured I’d stay with what I knew…Moreover, my talent director was kind. So I renewed my contract, and chose to wait and see.

Then without warning they sold us to a separate organization, Global Sound Records. That coincided with when Matt and I lost our parents. It was caused by a hit and run accident.
