“What is our final sales record for the last quarter?”

Dodson Keeta, the marketing manager, rose, took the podium, and showed off his teams’ results. The progress chart indicated he could meet the set goal for the remaining quarter, barring any serious market fluctuation.

I smiled a little to acknowledge him. I hoped my puffy eyes didn’t show too much today. Sleep had been nonexistent since that fateful day at the Potomac River. “I’m impressed by your team’s performance, Dodson. Good job.”

Though I wasn’t in the mood for chitchat, keeping the board members apprised of the company’s health was one of my main duties as founder. Thanks to Dodson, apparent progress made my job easier. Applause at the end of his presentation doubled as an usher in to the Safety Statistics Manager.

“Hi, Sanders.” I nodded to acknowledge him as he slid past me to the podium.

Sanders Rubrick was a practical man whose attention to detail remained unequalled, although he had a slanted gait when he stood. I wasn’t sure whether it was a result of a bad habit or his natural posture. Despite this, nothing escaped his notice in the testing lab—nothing. “Good morning!”

I sank back into my seat, listening to his expert presentation on how our company had improved swim safety. “Global statistics show that over 300,000 persons drown each year. One in ten deaths among young people is caused by drowning.” I gritted my teeth, knowing all too well how true his statements were. Luke… I imagined the young man he would have grown up to be, the life he could’ve had.…

My mind wandered to the lady I’d saved from drowning not long ago. It’d already been a couple of weeks, but it still felt like yesterday. A shudder ran through me over how close we both came to drowning, had God not brought the boaters. Her face, dripping wet, came into focus. Hair pitch-black and matted by wetness shielded part of her face. Her smooth chocolate-brown skin glowed when she opened her brown eyes for the first time after she’d come to. A certain atmosphere about her drew me in. I wished I could see her one more time, just to see her smile, but that was unnecessary. I knew she’d survived, because I found out what hospital she was taken to one week later, and when I called, they said she’d been discharged though I didn’t ask for her name.

Relief had overcome my apprehension that had lingered for days earlier. I was afraid she might have dry-drowned, like Luke. A lump formed in my throat.

“May I get through?”

I jerked my eyes upward. Sanders leaned in, waiting for me to let him return to his seat. “Oh, sorry.” I rose, but he stopped in front of me and whispered, “Take care of whatever is keeping you up at night.” He winked and swept past to his seat.

I cringed, feeling self-conscious. He did notice my puffy eyes. I hoped he was the only one. Regardless, I needed to push the brown-eyed lady off my mind and focus on my duties here because I was up to speak next.
