CHAPTER EIGHT
Rayne studied Brookeâs expression with a frown. She genuinely appeared to believe that Nat had refused to be blackmailed and instead killed herself to protect their secret. She also appeared to have suffered from the guilt that sheâd carried all these years.
âHenri told us that Nat gave him the cash,â she told her onetime friend. âThatâs what he used to buy his plane ticket to America.â
Brooke shook her head. âThatâs impossible. She didnât have that sort of money. Besides, she told me that she wasnât going to let herself be extorted by a grubby stable hand.â
âI told her to pay,â Trent abruptly broke into the conversation.
They all glanced at him in surprise.
âWhat?â Brooke demanded.
âShe called me the morning we were headed to Austria. She told me what happened, and that she was going to refuse Henriâs blackmail,â Trent admitted. âI begged her to reconsider. I didnât want Brooke to be hurt.â
Rayne widened her eyes in surprise. âYou knew about your sister and Nat?â
âOf course.â Trent shrugged. âThey wanted me to claim to be Natâs boyfriend. At least in the beginning. Later, Nat was frustrated with the act.â
âI didnât know sheâd called you,â Brooke breathed, her expression troubled.
Trent sighed. âAfter Natâs suicide we never talked about what happened.â
âHow far were you willing to go to keep your sister from being hurt?â Niko asked, his voice hard with suspicion.
Trent sent him a wary glance. âWhat are you asking?â
âDid you kill my sister?â
âNo one killed her,â Brooke insisted. âShe committed suicide because I broke her heart.â
Niko stubbornly shook his head. âShe didnât kill herself.â
âThat threatening note you found came from Henri,â Brooke told him. âNat showed it to me.â
âHenri might have written the note, but if Nat had killed herself, someone wouldnât have taken a shot at us less than an hour ago,â Rayne said.
Brooke jerked, as if shocked by Rayneâs accusation. âWhat are you talking about?â
âSomeone followed us after we left here and tried to kill us.â Rayne carefully watched Trentâs expression. He wasnât nearly as accomplished as his sister in hiding his emotions. âWhy would they do that if they werenât trying to keep us from prying into the past?â
âBecause youâre a pain in the ass,â Trent muttered, looking more like a sulky child than a potential killer.
Brooke abruptly stepped in front of Trent, as if protecting him from Rayne. âI donât know what youâre talking about. Trent and I were meeting with a potential client for the past two hours.â
Niko snorted as he glanced at the shotgun. âNow why donât I believe you?â
âIf you need proof, thereâs video surveillance that covers the main house and all of the outbuildings, as well as the paddocks.â Brooke pointed toward the rafters. Rayne tilted back her head to see the small camera that was angled downward to capture the barn on video. âThereâs no way either of us could have left the property without being seen.â
âYou could have sent one of your employees,â Niko pointed out.
Trent rolled his eyes. âI can hardly get them to clean a stall, let alone kill someone.
