Chapter Nine

When they returned to the camp they found five news vans blocked their path inside. As he left the gravel road and drove through the grass to avoid the media, Beau stated the obvious. “Evidently, that phone call you made didn’t work.”

Colin ducked down as the cameras came closer. Beau encouraged him to sit back up. “We’re not hiding from this.” “I feel horrible. You were so worried about word getting out that you were dating a parent because it might look bad, and now you’re trapped in this whole weird scandal.” Colin stayed down. “You go in, and I’ll drive back to the house.”

Irritated, Beau parked and managed to contain his temper. “No way. We’re in this together.” Colin thought it was a mistake, but they both climbed out of the truck. Over the truck’s hood Beau commanded, “Just smile. If Dubuque wants to be entertained by this, I at least want them to know I’m seeing a hottie.”

The humor left his voice, though, when he heard screams from the yard and saw mentors were diverting kids away from their regular path, which was upsetting their day. He turned on the crew and gave them plenty of footage of insane camp director. Colin grabbed his elbow and herded him inside. “This isn’t helping.”

By the time he entered the office, Beau was completely enraged. “I have to get them out of here now.”

“I’ve got this. You go do director stuff and let me take care of the legal stuff.” Beau gestured through the windows at the news vans. “Does that mean you can get rid of them?”

“Yes.” Beau’s office became command central for the war against their invisible enemy. Job one was a restraining order to keep the news crews pushed far enough back from the property so as not to disturb the campers. Thankfully the local judge was more than willing to issue restraining orders, which kept the journalists a hundred feet away from the camp’s property lines. Colin went outside to find Beau and tell him the good news. He found him on the dock, skipping rocks. “I’m a nobody; you’re a nobody. Why have we attracted national media attention?”

Colin knew Beau wasn’t that naive, but he let the frustrated comment drop. “News crews have moved out. Officially they only have to stay back from the property lines a hundred feet, but that’s enough to keep them out of the kids’ sight, right?”

“Yeah, thank you.”

“You aren’t going to cheer up anytime soon, are you?”

Beau skipped another rock. “Nope.”

Even though neither one of them mentioned it, Colin knew the only person aware of their attraction was Michael, but that didn’t make sense because Michael had more to lose than anyone, but how else could he explain the picture, which was obviously taken while he was in the hospital? It was cropped close and didn’t show the bruised side of his face, but it was obvious in his mind—the way they were facing each other, his hand wrapped in Beau’s hair—they were sitting on the hospital bed.
