Script Research

• Read the script to discover all the events that led up to this moment. Be as detailed as you like. What is the line that occurs before this song? What happens in the moments between that line and the beginning of the song?

• Count how many times the King interrupts Anna prior to the song.

• Count how many times Anna tries to talk to the King about the house she was promised.

• Are there other instances when Anna cannot speak freely?

• What else about the song or the Moment Before is significant?

Given Circumstances

• Earlier in the musical, Anna mentions that it is uncomfortable for her to live in a room that is guarded. How might this environment (a guarded room in a palace in a foreign country) affect Anna? In this song, does she fear being overheard? Who might be listening? Does she want to be overheard?

• Anna is a mother and a widow. How old is her son? How did her husband die? What was the funeral like? What was the marriage like, before the funeral? What was the courtship like, before the marriage? How might details from that courtship be important to her relationship to the King?

• What is Anna’s relationship to the King?

• What is important about status in this play? We don’t have royalty in the United States, but we do have a president. How would your student feel discussing something important with the president?

Actor’s Imagination/Collaboration

• Design a costume for the character, including undergarments. Since a lot of fuss is made about Anna’s clothing, the student might wish to wear something unusual to school and to notice people’s reactions. What would that be like for Anna?

• Recreate the moments that occur just before the start of the song. Act them out, enlisting other people’s help if you need to.

• Draw the floor plan of the palace. Draw the room that Anna lives in.

• Write a journal about the ship’s voyage that brought Anna to Siam.

• Plan a lesson or two that Anna might teach to the children.

• Write a love letter to Tom.

• Sew or embroider something.

• Whistle.

Connecting Character to Self (Personalization)

• In the scene between Anna and Edward, Edward suggests that it is important for Anna to help people and that Anna wants to be “needed.” In what ways can the actor relate to this?

• Has the actor ever had an experience where she was interrupted or couldn’t speak freely?

• Just before this scene, Anna threatens to quit her job. Has your student ever quit a job? Has she ever wanted to?

• Has your student ever had the experience of traveling to a foreign country? If not, does she remember what it was like to be “the new kid” in any situation (school, job, camp)?

• In the musical, it appears that the King has broken a promise. How does your student feel about broken promises?

• Anna wants privacy and a home of her own. Was there ever a moment where the actor needed
