Facing The Devil

After listening to what seemed like a lifetime of commotion, Maria and her brothers got a few hours of sleep before there was another loud disturbance in The Palace hallway. All she could hear was a woman screaming loud enough to wake the dead. Shaking, the boys jumped up and snuggled underneath Maria, clearly frightened by what was occurring. They had already been through too much today, so Maria bundled them up in the corner of the room then quickly ran to the door, hoping she would see an opportunity to escape while Angel was in the middle of doing something wicked to another woman. Rushing to the door, she arrived in just enough time to see Javier dragging a woman in bloody clothes and mangled hair down the hall.

Maria had to go see who Javier was dragging down the hallway; she had to make sure it wasn’t her mother. She had to remain hopeful and believe her mother had escaped and was on her way to the United States in order to return with help to get them out of there. Creeping down the hallway, Maria could hear crying and screaming. Unfortunately, something sounded familiar. Before she could turn the corner, she was aware that Angel had found her mother. Instantly, Maria tried to think of a way to distract her father so she could get her mother out of his eyesight. Maria turned the corner to see Sophia on her knees, crying in front of her husband, pleading for him to have mercy. Right away, he backhanded her across the face; the force caused her body to fall to the floor. The more Angel attacked Sophia, the more Maria’s blood boiled. She had no clear plan; the only thing she could think to do was go in there, kick him in his balls, and take her mother and run. Before she could execute her plan, something stopped her, the last person she wanted to see.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Javier asked in a heavy Spanish accent. Due to his good looks, Javier was loved by the girls, but Maria saw nothing good about him. His deep, copper skin tone was smooth; his teeth were pearly white; his smile could stop any woman in her tracks. He always kept his appearance on point, particularly his close-cut hair, which was always trimmed to perfection. Anything Javier did made Maria hate him more. She tried to walk by, but he placed his hand on the wall in front of her to block her path.

“Get out of my way.” Maria tried to duck under his arm. However, he caught her by her shoulders then pushed her against the wall.

“You want me don’t you?” Javier asked as she laughed in his face.

“Yes, I want to kill you so bad I can taste it.” Comprehending he was the main reason her mother was back in that room being tortured by her father, Maria would love nothing more than to see Javier dead at her feet.
