“The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,

St. Stephen’s Day was caught in the furze,

Although he was little his honor was great,

Jump up me lads and give him a treat.”

Johnny was in his element now. “Jump up! Jump up!”

Hiram echoed him in delight. “Jump! Jump!”

The two boys leapt and whirled around the living room, laughing in glee.

The song frolicked along.

“Up with the kettle and down with the pan,

And give us a penny to bury the wren.”

Johnny and Hiram made hand motions as they went up and down, round and round.
