CHAPTER 7

After finding the missing ball, they quickly got dressed. Dash was curious about how exactly Tommy got the jewelry in, but that was a mystery for another time. He was more interested in knowing what proof had been magically revealed to Tommy by the power of an orgasm.

“Okay, so.” Tommy was sitting on the edge of the bed, putting his socks and shoes back on. “I was wearing that wire from Darcey for like the last two weeks, okay? Running around the cash houses and trying to get something on Dio, right?”

“Okay?” Dash frowned. “But you said yourself that you guys hadn’t found anything.”

“Yeah, but that night when I called Darcey to tell him Dio was after me?” Tommy stood. “I told him we were fucked, and he says no, that he found somethin’ using one of the recordings. Somethin’ to do with one of the banks and that we were gonna be fine. I forgot about it until just right fuckin’ now.” He grinned. “See? Orgasms really do help.”

“But he didn’t tell you what it was?”

“No, he just told me to haul ass on over there.” Tommy appeared thoughtful. “Maybe we’ve been thinkin’ about this all wrong.”

“How do you mean?”

“Maybe Dio isn’t out to get me because of the wire. Maybe he’s trying to fuckin’ kill me because of something Darcey found.”

Dash’s brow furrowed. “Yeah, but how would he know Darcey had something?”

“Well…” Tommy frowned. “Okay, I dunno, but what I do know is that Darcey’s place is the only damn place that might have what we need. Plus, Dio and them probably won’t come looking for us there.”

“Except you just theorized Dio knew about Darcey’s evidence, which gives him a great reason to go there looking to destroy it.”

“You are no fun.”

“Fun is not exactly what I would describe this as.”

“Hey.” Tommy eyed Dash hungrily. “Some of it has been real fun.”

Dash ducked his head. “Let’s go.”

They left the motel, and Dash drove them over to Darcey’s. He was expecting to see more big black cars waiting for them, but the driveway was empty. He and Tommy hurried to the front door, and Tommy drew back his elbow as if he was about to smash the glass next to the door.

“Wait, wait!” Dash hissed.

“What?”

Dash kneeled and lifted the doormat, revealing the key.

“Oh, that works too.”

Dash put on a pair of latex gloves before he picked up the key.

“You just carry those around with you?” Tommy teased.

“Keep them in my glove box.” Dash unlocked the door.

“What, I don’t get any?”

“You knew Darcey. It wouldn’t be strange for someone to find your prints here.” Dash quickly ushered Tommy inside and then shut the door behind him.

“Okay, fine.” Tommy rolled his eyes. “Keep all your cool gloves to yourself.”

Dash had never returned to a place he’d cleaned before, and he felt a little anxious—especially standing a few feet away from where Tommy’s father had died.

Hopefully Tommy wouldn’t notice.

And he didn’t, of course. The contractors had done their work well, and there was no sign that blood had ever been spilled here.
