I’m running on caffeine and sunshine. I’ve been to two meetings and I’m preparing to ref my first contest this morning.

We never ref for our own country. It’s just not allowed. So this morning I’m on the Japan and Canada game.

I can hear Izan’s voice from the court next to ours, urging the ladies on. I texted him this morning that I was okay and I’d talk to him later. He then sent me a picture that was showing up online and I choked on a drink of latte.

It’s me wrapped in a pink rain coat being kissed in the rain. But the caption read “Who’s Ace Malloy’s first victim?” Not exactly how I wanted to start my day. And I started it by sneaking out of my room. I showered in the ref’s locker room.

He was sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want…

Nope. That’s not it.

I wanted to make a clean get away. I needed space. What happened last night was like seeing a rainbow for the first time, but the dark reality is still clear today. He’s from the U.S.A. and I’m from Brazil. I don’t have any desire to live in the States and I can’t imagine he’s interested in moving either.

It was a fantastic night, but best kept to one night.

The game’s a simple one…boring in fact. Japan dominates and Canada’s done in the competition. Sometimes it’s just like that—out played and just plain out.

I grab my bag, sign the books, and I’m off to head back to the hotel when long legs catch up with me.

“So…details, girlfriend.”

I roll my eyes to him. “Not a chance.”

“We know he went to your room. That’s clear. But what happened in the room, that’s foggy.”

It’s definitely foggy.

“We had a good night.” I try to make it vague, but his jaw drops open like a drawbridge.

I reach over and lift it closed with a giggle. “Really, I think it was just a one-night stand, nothing else.” My heart skips in my chest.

“Then you won’t mind going to see him play?”

I bite my lip. What can it hurt?

On the way, I dart into bathroom and change into casual clothes.

The game’s already in session and we find two of the last seats in the crowd. The sun’s perfect for the late afternoon match, hot to warm muscles, but not so hot as to be draining or have a risk of dehydration.

A long line creases Cason’s forehead. And every time they announce him as “Ace” my gut churns. He doesn’t like that name. I don’t like that name either. It’s not who he is. It’s a label and I think he’s had enough of those.

And another ball gets spiked into the net.

His partner’s failing to hold up his end of the team. His jump is off and his timing is crap.

“Another point for Norway, and the great duo of Derko and Ace go down by two.” The announcer seems way to happy about the current situation and I wring my hands in my lap.

Izan shakes his head.
