Chapter Five

Bambi

It’s way too fucking soon for me to relax or let my guard down. Sure, the second drink is helping a little, and also I’m feeling better now that this place has quieted down and Ace is sitting with me. But my heart rate still won’t slow down, and I still can’t believe that I’m in the clear now.

“Hey, baby, you can relax now.” Ace reaches out and drapes an arm around me, encouraging me to lean on him. I won’t deny that his touch feels good, and the heat coming off of his skin sends my thoughts to dangerous places.

The thing is, Gilberto was like this too at first: all warm and nice, always buying me nice perfumes and clothes to wear, calling me his only baby and the only girl for him. I started turning tricks for him and getting him a ton of money, and that made him happy. For a little while, at least. Then he found himself a new baby girl, and he didn’t have any reason to keep being nice to me.

Part of me wants to believe that Ace is nothing like that, believe that he’s different from all the other guys in my life who’ve abused me and treated me like shit. But part of me, a small part, is afraid that he’s just like all those other guys. Just because a guy has a pair of deep brown eyes and the sexiest floral tattoos that perfectly compliment his tan skin, doesn’t mean that he will treat me any better than the rest.

“You don’t know Gilberto,” I say bitterly. “You don’t know what he’s capable of, especially if it concerns his ‘property.’ He won’t rest until he gets me back, and then he’s probably gonna kill me.”

“Bambi.” He takes my round cheeks into his hands and forces me to look at his serious expression. “If that sick fuck thinks that he can take one step into this club without catching trouble from all of the boys, then he’s even more of an idiot than I thought. The Saints wouldn’t let that kind of behavior stand.”

I’m almost convinced, if only because Ace’s face, with his short dark beard and furrowed brows, looks nothing but sincere right now.

“Besides,” Ace continues in a dark tone. “If I ever see him again, I’ll kill him.”

I feel my shoulders relaxing, just a little bit, at his promise to protect me. No man has ever promised to protect me and followed through on that promise. I don’t know if I can really trust Ace. But a girl can dream, right?”

“I’m sorry for manhandling you back there,” Ace says, reaching out with one hand and smoothing out my hair where it got messed up.

My answering laugh is quiet and ironic. “You saw Gilberto back in the bar, he was gonna kill me. You don’t need to apologize for just trying to keep me safe. In the first place, I don’t even know why you or your friend stepped in.”
