No roses were taped to her locker the following week. Classes resumed like always, and since she had no classes with Max, she barely saw him. Sometimes while in class, Jay would discover herself daydreaming about him. She'd shake herself out of it.

Halfway through the week, she finally saw him again. He sat with her at lunch that afternoon when her friends had gone out for lunch. Lacking the mood for a restaurant, she'd stayed in alone. It was normal for her to stay at school, and she wasn't afraid of sitting alone or being looked at by the other students. What they thought didn't bother her much, never had. But Max sat with her that Wednesday.

"Are you sick?" Jay asked when she looked at him. He was pale and his lips had lost color.

"Huh?" He seemed surprised by her question. "Oh yes, I was a little sick."

"Was that why you weren't at school?"

"Me?"

She looked at her food. "I mean...if you're sick, it's better not to come to school."

She listened to him breathlessly laugh. "I was at home resting for a few days." He added after a few seconds, "If you noticed."

Jay glanced up at him through the narrow lids of her eyes. "My mom owns a bakery. Do you want to come by after school?"
