‘How are we going to do this?’ I asked Tushar on the phone. It was so frustrating. He had not been in the city for a whole week and I was missing him terribly. And that was when we had spent those heavenly three days together. I had thought that they would be enough to last a fortnight, by when he would be back after his assignment. But it did not even last a week. If it was so bad in seven days, I did not want to think what my condition would be on the fourteenth. Life is so unfair.

‘Do what?’ he asked.

‘Tushar, come on! How is this going to work if we do not even try to make it work?’

‘We don’t need to try! Things will go on as before. Nothing has changed …’

‘What do you mean nothing has changed?’ I asked.

‘… has it?

‘I …’ I didn’t know what to say. He said he loved me. And I said I loved him too. And we shared things about our past and stuff we had never told anyone else. And—I should finally tell you this now—the three days that we spent together were spent mostly in bed, yes. But they were not spent making love. We were just talking to each other. And it was amazing! We were in love!

And now, he was saying nothing had changed! How could everything be the same? How could we continue going on like before? Would it be the same now too? Would he call me whenever he was in Mumbai and we would meet up and have sex? Would we still not have any contact when he was not here?

Was it still just about the sex? Is he out of his freaking mind?

‘Chhavi! Why are you worrying so much? We will still have what we had before. Plus the love. How can it get any better?’

‘I don’t think we are on the same page here …’ I said, and wondered why he didn’t sound worried in the least.

‘So tell me what you’re thinking then. Think aloud. Let’s work on this together,’ he said.

‘I just … see—before that day, we were just … you know, using each other for sex, right?’

‘Right,’ he sounded amused.

‘What? What’s so funny? Are you laughing at me?’

‘The way you put it—using each other for sex. It’s funny,’ he laughed.

‘Tushar! Pay attention.’

‘Oh. Alright. Tell me. I am listening.’

‘So, we were just partners in bed and there were no strings attached. But now we are more. Now you have said you love me …’ I smiled at the thought. He loved me. It was still not getting old. The thought still was enough to make my day. I could not say the same thing about my nights, though. They were not made. They were torturous.

‘Yes. And you said you love me back. So we are in love with each other. So? Isn’t that a good thing?’

‘Yes, it is. But it also complicates everything. We don’t live in the same city and—’

‘I don’t live in any city,’ he interjected.
