Chapter Sixteen

At nine-thirty that evening, I lightly rapped my knuckles against Trey’s door. He didn’t answer, which was odd. By this point, he should’ve been home. I knocked again. No answer.

I staggered back toward the stairwell, my feet dragging with each step. My hand was on the door when it was yanked free from my weak grip. “Oh, pardon me,” I said and stepped aside, staring at the two sets of feet.

“Cammy?”

Oh great, it was Trey. And judging from the nice set of heels standing beside him, a woman. “Hey.” I chanced a look at him.

He stepped away from the girl. “You look… rough.”

“Thanks,” I breathed out.

He waved a hand in front of his nose. “And you smell rough too.”

It was a victory drink. A toast to my regaining control. However, Trey didn’t need to know that. His comment was said to with the effect of making himself look big around the voluptuous lady waiting to sink his claws into him. “Again, thanks.”

The girl beside him purred. “Trey.”

“Just a second. This is one of my friends.”

Ah, friends. Even in my slightly inebriated state, I felt the full weight of those words. To the outside world, we were just friends. Alone, or when I was around a cool guy, he was my boyfriend. A sigh fell out of me as I leaned against the wall. My legs were turning into jelly, making it very difficult to stand properly.

Trey leaned closer to me. “How much have you been drinking?”

“Just a little.” I squished my thumb and finger together at eye level to check.

Trey shook his head of golden frizz. I loved running my fingers through the thick of it but only after he showered. Most of the time when he’d come home from work, his hair would be greasy and grungy from working over the deep fryers. “Another bad day?” he asked as the girl tugged on his arm.

“Actually, today was a good day.” I didn’t see the douchebag, my students co-operated, Liam was ultra sweet.

“Umm, I see.”

My reason for wandering the hall though in my fleecy bathrobe with a cute two-piece pajama set on… “I wanted to talk to you.”

“Is it urgent? Can it wait?” He subtly tipped his head to the brunette beside him.

“I guess.” Now that I’ve seen him bringing home a tramp in person, I wanted to end things even faster. But waiting wouldn’t hurt me. Being that I should’ve dumped him a long time ago, what’s another twenty-four hours? I staggered to the stairwell. “I’ll be home tomorrow after five. Come over when you finish work.” The door was heavy as I pushed it open, and I barely managed to make it through before it bumped me on the ass.

The first step was a doozy and I slipped, banging my head against the wall.

A second later, Trey stood at the doorway, a look of amusement and genuine concern mixed across his features. “I’ll walk you up to your apartment.”

“Why? I’ll be fine. Go back to your little honey.
