I woke up just before dawn the next morning and shuffled quietly out of bed, careful not to pull on the blankets and wake up Zane. I had to pee. Again. It was the third time during the night. By the time I had to come back to bed, I was already awake and decided to get started with the day, not that I had too many responsibilities.

I made the fire and turned on the gas lights in the small room. Everything took forever to do these days. I was slow and all my movements were heavy and labored and required twice the effort they’d used to before I got pregnant. With the little I had accomplished, I was already tired and sat down carefully at the wooden table, hoping my chair wouldn’t squeak.

Then I noticed it. On the table, there was a small glass bowl full of berries and a note. A healthy breakfast for my two favorite people in the world, the note read.

Oh God, Zane! When had he managed to get this set up for me? Suddenly I was overwhelmed with emotions and out of nowhere I started weeping quietly. They weren’t sad tears, but definitely not all happy either. After all he’d done for me, forgiving me, getting me out of Port Shadow, keeping me safe all this time, I’d started feeling incredibly guilty and incredibly useless.

He kept saying I was already doing a very important job growing our baby inside me and that I should leave everything else to him, and yet I couldn’t appease the sneaking pangs of guilt that I wasn’t doing enough in return. He’d given up so much because of me and he’d even changed himself, turning from a stern warrior wolf into a caring, sensitive to all my needs man (he’d even learned how to cook!) and I was yet to think of a way to thank him properly.

For now, I could at least move my plump ass and go fetch some firewood to relieve him of one of his morning duties. Once I was finished with the deliciously sweet berries, I pulled on a jacket that barely closed over my round belly and took the unconscionable five minutes to pull on my boots, and then I ventured outside.

It was a beautiful morning. The woods were bathed in luscious oranges, browns and yellows and the moist patches of green moss shone like pieces of emerald strewn across the wet with morning dew rocks. The thick cover of dry oak leaves crunched under my feet as I headed towards the nearby brook where we usually gathered wood. I breathed in the invigorating, earthy scent of the autumn forest and I wished we could simply stay here forever and raise our child among this beauty. What could be better for a wolf pup than growing up amid mighty oaks, cool waterfalls and plenty of space to run around and play?

I was completely lost in my little daydream when I got the sudden sense that someone was following me.
