Chapter 12

ALLY ASSESSMENT

MUSIC PULSES THROUGH THE AIR outside of a swanky two-story brick building. Two massive, muscular vampire guards stand in front of the entrance with big-ass guns positioned on their shoulders. Berkeley and Aspen each hold one of my hands with Torrance leading the way and Hudson watching my sweet ass—his words, not mine.

“Welcome, Misters and Miss King,” one of the guards says. The man touches his shaved head and flicks his light blue eyes to me. “Mr. Stone has been expecting you.”

Both guards bow to us before spreading apart to allow us to stroll through them. I give neither of them my attention, my nerves begging me to keep to only my guys and myself. Outside of the academy is this whole other world. I’m not training to be a region leader—the board doesn’t even know. So now I have to put all of my donor classes to good use. Head down, don’t speak to anyone unless the guys tell me it’s okay, and most definitely don’t give anyone a chance to mess with me.

Rainbow lights flash through the dark room to the beat of the music. Berkeley smiles at me and spins me on my feet, pulling me into his arms to dance for a moment. I laugh and pat his chest, the gesture unexpected. I don’t think I’ve ever danced in front of my guys, not that we’ve had much time for such things.

Berkeley links our fingers together and draws his hand down my back to pull my hips to his. He sways to the music, his rhythm far better than mine. I grin and try my best to keep up, squealing every time he spins me until Torrance cuts in for a dance.

The song ends as another begins, and I wave my hand in front of my face to cool off my heated skin. It’s now that I take a chance to look around, though I love pretending the world doesn’t exist outside the five of us.

A dozen or so vampires dance around the room, all the furniture pushed back against the walls. I spot several familiar faces from every coven in our upcoming region. Savannah waves at us from the corner of the room where Elliot leans against the wall, keeping his gaze locked on her like she’s the only one in existence. I’m surprised to see him here, but it looks like a few other donors from my classes have managed to snag an invite to what I guess would be an after party.

“Want to say hello to them?” Torrance asks, spinning me around once more. “Elliot looks like he could use a familiar face.”

I peer around the room again and decide to give in to his suggestion. Torrance leads the way, and an unfamiliar vampire stops Hudson to congratulate him on his earlier win. I wave him off to show him that I’m perfectly fine with him mingling without me.

Aspen kisses my cheek. “I’m going to find you something to eat.”

“Mind if I say hello to a couple of people?” Berkeley asks, hugging me from behind.
