Chapter 4 “ The Stone ”
Before long, Honório’s yacht, Sirena, was anchored near the beach. Arthur, in an inflatable dinghy, had already carried the wrapped bodies of Uélison, Claudinei and Manoel. Now he was returning to pick up Isabela and Honório.
Both were waiting on the beach with champagne glasses in hand. Isabela was still wearing her orange dress, but was now barefoot, holding her high heel shoes in one hand. Honório had changed into something more appropriate for the sea. He was now in white shorts and wearing a striped polo shirt. Beside Honório was an ice cooler with a lot of ice, cans of beer and soda. Also, a wooden bottle holder with a selection of whiskeys.
“I love boat rides. The last time was with the girls from the agency, and it was business. It was fun. Today we won’t be able to sunbathe.”
“You can moon bathe.”
“Won’t you tell me what will happen?”
Honório smiled.
“I said today would be an unforgettable night, didn’t I?”
“Yes, you did.”
“So? Trust me.”
Honório held out his glass and they clinked another toast. They took another sip. The sand on the beach was already beginning to sway for Isabela due to the champagne.
“You are being cruel to me. I hate secrets. Tell me, Honório. I’m very anxious.”
“Believe me, Isa. Not more than I am.”
Honório kissed her vigorously as he ran a hand over Isabela’s bare back, and slowly descended below it, grasping tightly what he found. Isabela moaned, still kissing him. Her shoes fell to the ground.
“You’re driving me crazy,” Honório said.
Isabela just stared into his eyes with her face almost glued to his. She said nothing, just examined him with her big, long eyes.
Arthur arrived and promptly loaded the cooler and the liquor box onto the inflatable boat. The three entered the water’s edge. The waves were weak. Isabela was the first to enter, only wetting her feet in the water. Arthur and Honório pulled the boat a little farther and then climbed on. Honório and Isabela were in front and Arthur by the engine.
As they passed the waves of the surf, Isabela cried out and laughed at the slight sea bath she and Honório took. Honório smiled at her joy and charming laughter. He liked everything about her, including her sweet voice and her carioca accent. Isabela already spoke good English and he was making sure she got a job at an international modeling agency. She was a beautiful woman, and her skin color guaranteed prominence in Europe. Certainly, there was a great future ahead of her.
In the midst of joy and sitting beside his dream, Honório glanced at Arthur, who was, surprisingly, smiling too. Honório noticed something unusual in his smile. It could be memories from his time in the Navy, a passion for the sea, but there was something more intense and striking on his face. It seemed to be about something far away. However, as they moved away from the beach and the house, darkness started obscuring the features on his face.
