Saturday afternoon

NICK HAD CHOSEN Tybee Island as the out-of-town destination to get away with Jules because he’d wanted her all to himself. He liked the thought of making love to the sound of the surf, of walking along the beach together and sharing the ocean sunrise as the canvas behind the island’s historical buildings.

With its lighthouse, present structure circa 1773, and beach cottages, circa 1910, Tybee Island struck Nick as the perfect place to indulge their interests without the shadow of students, uncles or work to distract them.

He wanted a break from distractions. He’d waited a week to get her alone again, to make love to her and solve the mystery of why she affected him the way she did.

He was seriously affected.

With a sidelong glance, Nick watched her walk along by his side, long hair lifting up on the wind. They’d decided to walk along the beach and she looked relaxed, content with the crashing surf, the wind and the throaty cries of the gulls filling the silence between them.

A University of Savannah sweatshirt kept the twilight chill at bay, but she’d removed her sneakers and socks and rolled up her cuffs to walk through the sand. She fit in as naturally on this beach as she had when mingling with strangers on closing night. Jules went with the flow and made the most of each moment. Nick found her easy to be around, her quiet independence refreshing.

“Coming here was a wonderful idea.” She tightened her grip on his hand.

He squeezed back, liking the intimate simplicity of holding hands. “I want you all to myself, beautiful. I’m tired of sharing. All I’ve done this week is try to act like I don’t want to be touching you when I do.”

She only smiled, a flash of white in the deepening dusk.

The boardwalk beckoned them in the distance, a pavilion filled with sound and bright light that glowed in the black night, reflected against the cold surf nibbling at their feet.

“You hungry?” he asked, directing Jules to a bench and motioning her to sit while he plucked her sneakers from her hand and knelt before her.

“Not as hungry for food as I am for you. I don’t feel like doing the restaurant thing after last night. Do you mind?”

“That you’re hungry for me instead of dinner? Ah, no. In fact, that fits neatly in with my fantasies about you.” Propping her slim foot on his lap, he brushed the sand from her toes.

“Fantasies, hmm? Can I make your dreams come true, Nick?” She shot him a sultry smile.

“You already are.” Lifting her foot, he pressed his open mouth to her ankle, smiled when he felt her shiver in reply. “I want to replace my gift inside your lovely body. Just the thought has been driving me crazy.”

Her eyes gleamed, looked smoky and sexy in the glow cast by a streetlamp on the boardwalk. He twirled his tongue around her anklebone, tasted the salty sea spray on her skin. “I want to explore every inch of you tonight, discover what makes you shiver and sigh….
