Twenty-Eight

Logan stationed himself on a bench near one end of the food court. He’d finished the pretzel and now just sipped the soda, staring down at the Samsung in his hand while making furtive glances at Sean Wescott and Ashley Gilmore. From this angle, he had a clear view of them, but they wouldn’t easily see him.

He’d been sitting there for nearly an hour.

The battery on the phone was almost dead. Which meant that at any moment his line to Agent Ramirez would soon be severed.

He took another sip of his soda. Just dregs now and some ice. He tossed it into the trashcan next to the bench, stared down at the nearly dead Samsung.

The phone vibrated in his hand.

INCOMING CALL, the screen said.

He placed the phone to his ear, said, “I’m almost out of battery power.”

Agent Ramirez said, “Any progress?”

“None. How far away are you?”

“Not far at all. We should be—”

The phone died, cutting her off.

“Shit,” Logan muttered. He held the dead phone in his hand for a moment, then tossed it into the trashcan as well.

He stood up. He would look weird sitting on the bench with no shopping bags and no cell phone to vacuously stare at. He’d stick out, so he started walking the perimeter of the food court.

Logan had barely taken ten steps when he heard the gunshots.
