Abby wasn’t sure what to expect when she came back into the bedroom with two flashlights and her bedding folded over her arms after Gregor had gone back down to his home. What she found was the prince frowning moodily, all signs of their recent sense of awareness gone. To say the least, she was surprised.
But it gave her a moment to look him over while she drew the drapes tightly around the windows and set up the small battery-run lantern they would use as darkness fell. She was searching for signs of recovery and there were plenty of them. His eyes were bright and the way he held himself, leaning back against the headboard, propped by pillows, showed a return to control and strength that had been missing for the last twenty-four hours. He was much better. There was no doubt about it. That gave her a quick sense of relief.
But as she looked more closely, she detected a tightening around his eyes, a taut, stretched look to his skin, a strained look to the way he was balanced, that showed he still had a long way to go to full health.
“Abby, tell me this,” he said without preamble, fixing her with a steady gaze from those brilliant blue eyes. “I know that you’ve said that you trust Gregor implicitly. Why? And why should I trust him?”
She set the linens down on a chair and turned to consider his question, her head to the side.
“He’s my oldest friend,” she said slowly, thinking. “His father worked for your family for years. He’s never done anything to cause you suspicion. That I know of. Why shouldn’t you trust him?”
“Why shouldn’t I trust him?” He repeated the question as though it were too naïve for words. “Abby, I can’t afford to take anything on faith.”
She shrugged. “What about me?” she asked simply.
“You.” The hard look in his eyes softened and his gaze caressed her face. “You’re different.”
“Am I?”
He waved the question away. “Of course. You probably saved my life.”
“Oh, I did not.”
He nodded. “Gregor said I could have had irreparable damage if you hadn’t gone for help when you did.”
“Well, it’s lucky that didn’t happen.” She smiled and shrugged. “But it’s more thanks to Gregor than to me.”
His eyes darkened. “Here’s the problem. About Gregor.” He hesitated as though not sure if he really should be telling her this, but in a few seconds he seemed to make the decision to go on. “I’ve got to tell you, I can’t trust anyone who’s got this much of a fixation on the royal family. He did his thesis on our diseases. Who knows what else he’s studied about us? Don’t you find it all a little strange? Motive comes into play. You have to wonder just what is going on with this guy.”
Abby felt a chill shiver down her spine. After all, she’d had moments of similar doubts. But she wanted to deny them. “He’s helping you and he’s keeping our presence here secret.
