To my surprise, Mason made very little fuss about the trip. He didn’t like Andrea, not one little bit, said she was too pushy and not quite up to our standard. I have no idea why he thought that. She spoke perfectly well, dressed smartly and her house was every bit as expensive and well-appointed as ours, even more so. Maybe it was just her self-assurance and the fact she coped perfectly well on her own. He preferred his women to be shy, retiring and dependent on him.

I didn’t announce my holiday break as a fait accompli as Andrea had suggested, but the moment I told him about her prize package he jumped right in and guessed she’d asked me to go. I admitted it and he simply told me to enjoy myself before disappearing into his study, briefcase under one arm.

I let go the breath I was holding and began to look forward to a couple of days away from the oppressive atmosphere in the house. The safe haven I had grown used to was now threatening and unwelcome.

Andrea could be overwhelming at times but I did enjoy her company. She gave me courage, made me laugh, and was larger than life. I felt safe when I was with her, more confident, happier, carefree.
