Chapter Eleven

Unlike his expectations, he did not get to think so much about Ogechukwu. It may have been his awareness of the great distance between them that made that other part of his life seen unreal and removed. After all, she had been unreceptive to taking their friendship beyond platonic in the two years he had known her.

His days were so busy with court appearances and chambers work, and at times he worked till midnight before he went home; reading reports and references books to prepare the address he had to deliver before the Benin high court. Before he quite knew it, it was Friday, and he was driving down to Enugu, straight from Benin, merely stopping at his chambers to drop the case file and books he had taken for the case. He had packed and taken his weekend bag before he left his house that morning.

All the way down to Enugu his thoughts were all about Nene. This surprised him, because in the past he never let any girl dominate his thoughts. It was not his style to devote himself to just one girl till Ogechukwu came into his life. Now Nene seemed to be causing the same reaction from him. His relationship with Ogechukwu had not been meant to be exclusive. The lack of encouragement on her part had forced him to adopt his usual style of keeping a number of relationships at a time, to maintain a balance on his emotions. None of his relationships was allowed to get too much under his guard while he was giving Ogechukwu time to recover from her loss and in time think of replacement. This new girl promised to be a different influence in his life.

He arrived at Enugu, checked into Gemini Inn, then freshened up and drove to the campus. When he drove up in front of the hostel that evening it was not too dark. The stars had come out, and the moon was thin up in the sky. A lot of other cars were already parked in front of the hostel. Some of them had couples standing beside them or sitting inside, close to each other.

Someone who was about to drive out just as Ekene was parking drew alongside him and tooted his horn. He looked out the window to see a friend of his, also a lawyer, who like him had a practice in Onitsha.

“Hey, senior, what are you doing here?”

“Chuks.” He got out of his car and walked across to where the other man’s car was parked, the engine running. Ekene shook the man’s hand, saying hello to the girl beside the man in the car.

“So what are you doing in Enugu this weekend?” the other man asked.

“Much as you are, visiting,” he smiled.

“Don’t tell me you are breaking off ties in Onitsha,” the other joked. He was referring to his relationship with Ogechukwu. His friends like to tease him about his relationship with Oge. “Smart guy.”

“Not so smart.”

“Are you in town for the whole weekend?”

“Yes.
