Chapter 18
Connor
The ride back to the camp wasnât fun. I had to be in human shape, and even though it was a comfortable car, every bump and corner hurt. In fact, by now I was certain I had badly bruised my ribs by landing on the hood of that SUV.
It was a relief when Mark pulled into the yard at our camp and I could get out. I wanted to shift back into the wolf immediately, but Fred shook her head.
âThereâs something we have to show you first, so you can think about it while you rest.â
I wondered why that wasnât possible in wolf shape, but since I wanted to run a team rather than dominate them as Reg had done, I sighed and nodded.
âYou can have a shot of booze and a steak while we show you.â Mark chuckled, knowing that both would entice me to delay my shift.
In fact, delicious smells came from the backyard, and I walked around the house, wondering where I had hit my leg hard enough to limp.
The other three young wolves had the grill going already, and one of them lifted a steak, waggling it at me.
I growled at him, playfully enough that he knew that I was delighted with their initiative. A moment later, I was seated at the table, with that steaming steak in front of me. It was perfection, still juicy enough inside to make my mouth water.
âThank you,â I told him, meeting his eyes to let him see my joy. âVery well done.â
His grin told me he had hoped for that recognition from his pack leader. I was becoming that, despite my misgivings.
Soon, Mark and Fred were sitting at the same table, being served as well.
âNow, do you remember that envelope with money you tossed on the table before you left?â Mark asked.
I nodded, and remembered that wallet I still hadnât checked. A pang of urgency welled up.
âFred warned me not to touch it,â Mark continued.
That promised to get very interesting, I thought. âWhy?â
âI didnât trust Beechcroft,â she said simply. âHe behaved strangely during that kidnapping, and yes, I got to see some of it. I spelled Mark in doing guard duty that day.â
Her eyes darkened, and I realized she had heard me scream over the phone.
âSo I wondered if this was another trap.â
âGo on.â
âI put on gloves before opening it, and I checked each bill, all twenty of them. Seven were counterfeit.â
I whistled through my teeth. âThat bastard.â
âIt gets better,â Mark said grimly.
Fred nodded. âI wrote down the numbers of the ones that were real.â
âYes?â
âI have a friend who works for the police in Asheton. And I called her and asked her to check the numbers.â
I stared at her. âThatâs⦠clever. I never would have through of that.â
âFred has a very suspicious mind.â Mark grinned at her, looking proud.
âShe called me back an hour later, rather upset,â Fred continued. âYou see, those bills were part of some ransom money paid in a case that never went public, about five years ago.
