“Have you lost your fucking mind?” Syrus broke through the living room door like a raging bull as Callum, Miles and myself followed in after him.

After I’d challenged Lyra to a fight, of course Callum and Syrus wouldn’t waste a second, grabbing and dragging me back into the cabin like a child who needed to be scolded.

Now here we all stood, in the living room, the three guys with faces so red they looked like volcanoes about to erupt.

“No, I think I’m quite sane. Thank you very much.” I casually folded my arms and leaned my back against the wall by the open window.

“Oh no, I don’t think you are.” Callum palmed his forehead and grumbled bitterly to himself before continuing to mutter. “If you had an ounce of sanity you would never have challenged Lyra, of all people, to a battle to the death.”

“Excuse me, what?” I blinked three times, holding up a palm to Callum. “Did you just say a ‘battle...to-the-death?’”

“Yes, Amira. That’s what happens when you challenge the victor of a betaship brawl.” Callum said through gritted teeth as if astonished I could go through twenty three years of life not knowing something so basic.

“Lyra didn’t kill any of the sentinels she fought with today, why would our battle have to be to the death?” I asked incredulously.

“That was a Pack brawl.” Miles slumped over to me with droopy shoulders and a miserable look on his face. His hands gripped my shoulders and gave them a firm squeeze. “It’s different when you challenge the victor of the brawl. The stakes are raised to deter anyone from challenging the victor. If you fight Lyra, it’s to the death. You need to rescind your challenge, Amira.”

This wasn’t a request. This was a command. Mile’s once casual and jovial expression was replaced by one so stony and cold I could barely recognize the man in front of me.

“Not gonna happen.” I shifted my head to the side, breaking his gaze.

Brushing Miles to the side, Syrus took my head in his hands and started scanning my forehead as if trying to find something.

“Nope. I don’t see any bumps here. Maybe her hair is concealing the injury.” Syrus rummaged through my hair, pulling it in every direction so he could see my scalp.

“Um, excuse me. What the hell are you doing?” I shoved him in the chest and he stumbled back three steps. “Did I give you permission to touch me?”

“First of all, an alpha doesn’t need permission to assess the health of his pack members. And secondly, you didn’t seem to have a problem when Miles touched you a moment ago.” Syrus' brows rose in dismay as he glared at me from under his thick lashes.

Poor Miles looked at his fuming alpha, then back at me while fumbling with his fingers like a confused puppy.

“Maybe I just like Miles better than you. Ever thought of that?” I folded my arms and looked away, but by the deathly silence that filled the room, I know I shouldn’t have said that to Syrus.
