Dark and unusual dreams haunted my sleep, and I had a feeling it had something to do with Maisy’s Morpheus grapes. I was standing in a giant valley made of foil, with a weird and doughy sand underneath my feet. A glossy red sun rose over foil mountains and it turned black. It crumbled into pieces and fell on top of me.

I woke to the sound of hissing, and for a moment I wondered if a kettle was brewing somewhere in my hotel suite. Then I heard panicked yelling.

“Hey! Calm down man! Don’t use that on me, I’m MCI!”

My eyes shot open at the sound of Chad Chaplin’s voice, but I still managed to scream as I saw him standing at the foot of my bed. Artemis was standing on top of my legs, his haunches raised high as his eyes glowed bright green.

“What’s going on?!” I shouted.

“Give me the word and I’ll blast him, Chelsea!” Artemis shouted without looking back. “We’ve got a break in!”

“Artemis relax, I know him!”

The little black cat instantly adopted a more relaxed stance and his eyes returned to a normal color. “Oh. Well. He should have said that.”

“I did!” Chad said. He slowly lowered his hands and took off his trilby. He was wearing the same pink and green striped suit underneath his trench coat. “Several times!”

“That’s exactly what a criminal would say,” Artemis said.

“I’m an MCI agent. I’m not a criminal.”

“Well that suit is a crime against fashion.” Artemis started licking the back of his paw. “I don’t know what you guys are thinking, I would have—”

“Can you both stop,” I said. “Chad, what are you doing in my bedroom?”

He looked at me and offered an apologetic smile. “Sorry about the sudden intrusion. Again. I don’t get much say in these matters. Your name popped up on my follow up schedule and I kind of have to visit, regardless of the time.”

“Don’t I get any notification? What if I was with a bunch of non-magicals?”

“Oh, the system is very carefully devised to ensure I’ll never visit unless it’s safe.” He clapped his hands together. “So, how’s it going? Making quick work of this case?”

“Not really.” I swung my legs out of bed and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. “We’ve been on lockdown since the police arrived. Not much has happened.”

“Ah, I was worried that might happen, do you—” Chad paused as a knock came from my suite door. “Tell them to go away.”

“Who is it?!” I shouted.

“Lizzy!” she shouted back through the door.

“It’s my cousin. She’s a witch. She can come in.”

Chad considered it for a moment. “Is she cute?”

“She’d eat you alive.”

“Bring her in.”

I got up and let Lizzy in. “The MCI guy is here,” I whispered under my breath.

“Huh? Oh…” she said upon seeing him. “Wow. You’re like… freakishly tall. Was your mother a giant? Did she fall in love with a lamppost?”

“Very funny,” Chad said with a disapproving frown. “What inspired your look? No, wait, don’t tell me. Tinkerbell goes to Hot Topic.
