At the other end of the yard in the lockup, Rab sat huddled on the bed wrapped in a filthy blanket. Oblivious to the events that were unfolding he wondered when it was going to be over.
Chapter 15
‘Okay, before I go and see the DCI and get my bollocks chewed off, what do we know so far?’ DI Dave Gowan asked as he stood in front of the squad room holding an impromptu catch-up. ‘Don’t all speak at once,’ he looked around at the blank faces, ‘Jonno start us off.’
‘We pulled the lad in again, Michael Harrison…’
‘Right little basta…’ cut in Lee.
‘Okay, Lee, let Jonno finish.’
‘Sorry, boss.’
‘As I was saying,’ he cast a glance towards his young partner, ‘to be blunt he was taking the piss, trying to play us for fools and denied everything.’
‘If you ask me, I reckon he’s got selective amnesia,’ Lee added.
Jonno carried on. ‘Couldn’t remember where the game was played, said he didn’t know where the Blacksmiths is - absolute bollocks, but until we get something to tie him in we can’t prove a thing.’
‘And the brewery?’ Dave Gowan.
‘I spoke with the regional Sales Manager,’ he glanced at his notes. ‘Dave Moors, he’d had dealings with the Blacksmiths for years. Turns out they had some serious money problems, not helped by the fact most of the business’s in the area have packed up or moved away. Seems there was no other option other than put the place up for sale.’
‘Who initiated the sale, the brewery?’ asked Gowan.
‘Indirectly, the place was a “free house”, not tied to any particular brewery, but the debts were mounting, they owed the Hull Brewery a fair amount. Paul Armstrong is still registered as the licensee.’
‘Got an address for him?’
‘Strange that one, he’s still on the brewery books as living in the flat above the pub.’
‘Then why haven’t you brought him in?’ The DI questioned.
‘When we paid a visit earlier, there was no sign that the place was occupied,’ Lee was quick to add.
‘But saying that the exterior of the place looked as if it’s been tarted up and it looked as if the empties in the back yard hadn’t been there long.’ Jonno quickly replied.
‘Tarted up, in what way?’
‘Paint work all washed, windows cleaned that sort of thing, not what you’d expect of a place that’d been closed for business for months.
‘According to, Moors, Armstrong has another business, scrap, he’s in partnership with,’ he checked the notes, ‘Eddie Marriot.’
‘Where’s the scrap yard?’
‘All he knows is that it’s not far from the Blackies, somewhere on English Street.’
‘Okay, that’s another angle, find the yard. See if all this ties together, Armstrong, Marriot and Harrison. Get uniform to keep an eye on the pub, he’s got to show sometime. I’ll let the boss know, not that we’ve got much to report.’
‘Will do, I’ll try a search on Google.’
‘There is something else, before you go take a look at this.’ Jonno put a DVD in the player, it was the town centre CCTV for the previous Sunday evening.
