Dale’s efforts with the nurse hadn’t resulted in the desired outcome for Gail. She was stuck in the hospital for at least a few more days. The nurse was being cagey about when they would discharge her.
Gail had a deep mistrust of hospitals. She’d heard the news reports about how often human error caused harm. Sometimes people died in hospitals as a result of those errors. Her thoughts zeroed in on the doc’s hint at complications. She needled the nurse, who finally admitted Gail had gotten an infection after the surgery.
Her partner was flitting around again, probably flirting with the nurse. Gail’s eyes traveled to the trash can like a heat-seeking missile. The intense level of anxiety over the wadded-up ball of paper she herself had thrown at Dale was perplexing. She was the one who had directed him to toss it into the garbage can.
Gail pounced the minute the nurse came into the room. “I need that note in the trash can,” she cried out as if her life depended on retrieving the blood-soaked paper.
The nurse tilted her head. “Sorry?”
“There was a note in my pants pocket and um…I might have been a bit rash, crumpling it up and tossing it away. I need it back, please,” Gail rushed to explain.
The monitor started a double time version of a hospital song and seemed to concern the nurse. Gail’s eyes darted between the garbage can and the noisy machine with wires sprouting out like vines. She wondered if this was what a panic attack felt like.
“I’ll get the note, don’t worry. I don’t think housekeeping has emptied the garbage yet today,” she said.
The machine’s song settled into the pre-Alvin and the Chipmunks version as Gail relaxed. The slight shake of the nurse’s head revealed how crazy Gail must have sounded. Grabbing gloves from the dispenser, the nurse snapped them on and plucked the note from the can. She gently laid it on the wheeled, bedside table. A grimace punctuated her distaste for the task.
Gail wondered if the nurse’s reaction had more to do with something retrieved from the trash or the liberal amount of blood evident on the crumpled piece of paper. If the origin of her reaction was the blood, the nurse was definitely in the wrong occupation.
“Thanks.” Touching the paper, Gail felt like the nurse had slathered a wound with soothing balm. She attempted to unravel the wad and smooth out the creases.
A tiny, sympathetic smile appeared with the nurse’s subtle nodding. She helped Gail with her gloved hands. Gail wondered if that was the face she showed to the cray-cray patients when she wanted them to settle down and behave. No matter, Gail had her message, and she wasn’t about to lose it again.
Dale bounced into the room and spotted the bloody note. “What the hell? Didn’t I toss that disgusting thing in the can?”
“Any luck on operation Hunka Hunka Burning Love?” She mused that he was so easily distracted, and that was a very good thing. She wasn’t ready to place her motivations under a microscope for either of them to sift through.
