CHAPTER FOUR

Despite getting winged by a bullet, and all the bruises I had on me from the fight, I was in pretty high spirits. The getting laid helped, especially by a new girl, especially by one as hot as Sofia, but it was more that I had resolved a situation that had been bugging me for what felt like awhile now. Travis and Thomas were dealt with. On top of that, something I’d been worrying about for awhile, living space, was dealt with, too.

Now we had more than enough living space.

Of course it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. I wasn’t looking forward to seeing Jessica or Hannah again, as guilty as that made me feel, because of the murder thing. But I was going to be there for them, if they wanted that.

But I was intent on enjoying my good mood for at least the duration of the walk over there. And it was even a decent temperature out, and the skies were clear. All in all, it was a nice day out. And as I thought that, I suddenly remembered something that I have no fucking clue how I’d forgotten: the ecological center!

I had the key that damned basement now. Or I sure hope I did and some idiot hadn’t mislabeled it. But...damn, that’d have to wait. Well, it had kept this long, it’d keep a bit longer. I didn’t like us split up like this. Although the two biggest known human threats were now dead and burned, and I honestly didn’t anticipate ever seeing the other three again, that didn’t mean there weren’t other problems that might crop up, other psychos who might show up out of nowhere. I wanted us together, united. So I picked up the pace.

“What’s on your mind?” Sofia asked after a few moments.

“Lots of things,” I murmured.

“Like what?”

“Like the fact that I have a key to an ecological center basement that seems like it hasn’t been opened for years, and I’m really curious to know what’s down there. Like the fact that I’m worried Jessica or Hannah will be angry with me or Susan for the death of Travis. I’m also thinking about how to best fortify the house, make it better. How I need to search it, top to bottom, and get a thorough inventory of our supplies.”

“Oh,” she replied after a moment. “There is a lot to consider, I suppose.”

I just grunted. There really was a lot to consider.

“You know, it just occurred to me, but I guess you’re...in charge, huh?”

I glanced over at her. “I mean, I guess so.” I thought about it. “When we first met, Susan and Lara and I kind of came to an agreement. They both felt...well, Lara definitely felt that I was better at survival than they were. Susan...concedes a little of that. So they let me be in charge. When Jessica and Hannah showed up, Jessica basically felt the same way, and Hannah...well, she’s making me teach her, and she’s a little hardheaded, but she’s reasonable.
