CHAPTER FIVE

“You’re kind of crazy, you know that?” Lara asked.

We were walking back, kicking through the latest snowfall, both of us keeping an eye out for plants or anything alive. It was basically automatic now, scanning like that. It was amazing how your brain and body could adapt to things, how you eventually internalized things into your own personal mental library.

“Why?” I replied.

“You just...I have no idea how you just outright confronted her like that.”

“Was I wrong?”

“I mean...no, you weren’t. I’m not saying it was bad, I just don’t know how you did it. That was really uncomfortable and, well...brave, I guess.”

“It needed to be said. I spent a lot of time keeping my mouth shut, not saying things when I really should have. I’m done doing that,” I replied.

“Well, I hope it works out for all of us,” Lara murmured.

“Me too.”

We paused as Lara spied some berries on a low, withered shrub. I watched her back while she picked them and slipped them into a little glass jar. That was the problem nowadays, you pretty much always had to be on the lookout for more food. It’d be great to find one of this miracle, hidden surpluses you always hear about. Someone finding a warehouse packed with a decade worth of freeze-dried food or cans or military rations. You could become a king like that, if you were smart about it and had the right people.

Power was whatever people wanted, and if you had it, you had power.

The trouble with power was you had to keep it, and other people wanted it. Most people, I think, have some reason they don’t challenge power. Fear, mostly. Fear of failure, or even fear of success, for the smarter ones. Fear of pain, fear of death. Or maybe they just liked you. Or they saw the situation and figured this was better than the alternatives. The more reasons not to do it you could throw up around yourself, the better your hold of power was.

I thought about what I might do.

I didn’t really want to be in charge of something like a city, but I did like the idea of being in charge of maybe a camp of a few dozen people.

I looked at Lara and couldn’t help but grin a little. Especially if most of them were women willing to get naked with me.

That would be the life.

That made me think of something. “Lara,” I said as he she finished picking the berries and we got back to walking.

“Yeah?”

“Let’s say I meet some hot chick passing through who wants to fuck, would it bother you if I indulged?” I asked.

“No,” she replied. “I don’t care.”

“Okay, good.”

“Have you?”

“No. You and Susan and Jessica are the only people I met. Well, besides that asshole who tried to kill me. Just working out theoreticals. I have to admit, since I’ve gotten a taste of post-apocalyptic life, my sexual appetite is bigger. Or probably it’s as big as it’s always been, I guess.”

“That’s fair,” Lara replied.
