CHAPTER FOUR

“Shit,” I whispered.

Something was wrong. I remained crouched among the snow and dead trees surrounding me. What was it? I’d seen something. I looked around. It was the following day after pounding both women in the ass and I’d decided to go out hunting some more. I’d headed south and east, the way I’d originally come from, looking for more fertile hunting grounds. So far I’d found a pair of rabbits that were wrapped in tarp and stored in my pack.

I saw it again, what I’d initially seen, and it was like TNT detonating in my mind.

It was a flash of light maybe a quarter mile off. I jerked to the right, behind a big tree, right as a rifle round seared by. It smashed into another tree, barely missing me. My heart kicked right up to painful, thumping violently in my chest, and I tasted the rusty, rancid taste of pure terror. Pressing myself tight up against the tree, I stood as still as a statue. What the fuck was this? I wasn’t caught completely off-guard, because I always knew this was a possibility. There were different kinds of people in the world now, and some of them were the kind to straight up just murder you, from a distance if at all possible.

They were hunters of humans.

The only real question was, was it a random stranger, or possibly someone from that lodge or campground or whatever? Maybe the husband had pieced together that his hot wife was screwing around on him, and figured he’d happened upon the guy doing her. Well, technically I was going to tomorrow, so it’d really just be preemptive retaliation. Or maybe it was a mistake? I carefully, slowly began to lean out, trying to get a good view. I caught sight of a dark figure moving through the trees, and suddenly they aimed and fired again.

Bark blew off the tree I was hiding behind as I pulled back.

Okay, fuck. So, there was definitely no mistake. They knew what they were doing. So how in the fuck was I going to handle this? If I’d had my rifle or maybe the pistol, I’d have a better shot. But all I had was the bow and a knife. I was a decent shot with the bow and arrow, but I was a much better shot with a gun. After a few seconds I realized I wasn’t hearing footsteps. They’d stopped advancing, meaning we were now going to play the waiting game, with me at a severe fucking disadvantage. They knew precisely where I was, I only had a vague notion where they were. I sat there, my breath foaming on the air, waiting.

I really might die here.

I don’t know how long I stood there, my whole body rigid, growing slowly colder, terror pounding through my veins, but it felt like a long time. Thoughts drifted through my head, a strange mishmash of plans of actions, memories, regrets, and things I wished I could do. Mainly, I just wished I could have sex with more women, also eat a hamburger again.
